Crumb quilting with Calculator tape - The String and Crumb series

Hello everyone! Today, we are going to show you another one of my favorite string busting ideas! It is fast easy, useful as a novelty block, sashing, borders and a lot of fun! This was a Viewers Requested Video too!

If you don't have calculator tape, you can use pieces of newspaper to stabilize these little crumbs. This is a method that you choice what size of block you are going to make or what size of paper you have on hand for the backing.

I have chosen to make my string block out of all the colors but you can just choose one color for a different effect!

Remember it is easier to make more than one of these blocks at once because you can chain piece.

Remember to have fun with trying different scale of prints, color combinations, different layouts and keep moving forward.

Most importantly, quilting and piecing is about having fun not feeling pressured!

There is so many things to look at on a scrappy quilt that other people won't notice any mistakes you make.

I hope this helps you conquer your Mount Scrapmore!

Brenda I love your YouTube videos, I can go back and watch as needed to get the block done. For string piecing on adding machine tape I have a suggestion. After Christmas buy rolls of gift wrapping paper, some have grids on the back side. Cut strips of this paper the width you need for strips. I then cut the strip in half so it isn’t too long to work with. It tears off nicely and you can make different size borders easily.

I typically will watch five videos on the same subject because you can always pick up pointers from everybody.

What I’d like to share is something that Karen Brown does and her channel is called just get it done Quilt and she leaves a quarter inch when she’s trimming her adding machine tape because that way she can sew the strips together and not have that excess paper in the seams

This is easy to do on your old cash register receipts. Recycling paper and fabric!

I let the fabric overhang by more than 1/4 inch on each side. When I trim, I leave a 1/4 inch on each side of the paper strip for a seam allowance. Then you can sew them leaving the paper in place to prevent stretching. These multiply quickly while the scrap pile shrinks.

Nice. I've read about people using their grocery store receipts, gas receipts etc to sew the fabric onto. I've seen some cut 1/4 inch from each of the sides so that the measurement of the fabric is the exact width of the tape! I may be doing this soon

Great video (as always!). I've never tried this method and that's surprising, because I've tried a lot of different quilts and methods. I have a lot of scrap paper available to me that I could cut into strips. From one group, I have 40-60 sheets of paper a month that our materials are printed on and it seems such a waste to just throw or shred it. I'll probably give this a try and have yet another addiction, ha ha.

Thanks for your kind words and I'm so excited for our Sew Date! I've been trying to decide what I'm going to work on and I'm leaning towards either fabric postcards or crumb/crazy piecing. I figure something that I don't have to think a whole lot about will be best. What do you have planned?

Brenda, can you use selvedge edges for this? If not, when or where, can you use selvedges? Do they have to be sewed down on a fabric foundation?

Brenda I am new to the concept of paper piecing and have been patiently watching you create. Today something clicked I will have a go at this, thank you so much for sharing.
