R.A.D. The Robot Gets Brought Back To Life. Full Rehab Video Gives This Robot A Second Chance.

Sometimes I'll see something at the Flea market and I just can't walk away. This was one of those times. R.A.D. was sitting there, dirty and unloved, but I saw some potential. Back in the day, I used to love to create new things from old ones, and this would have been a perfect "Thing" to upgrade.
A camera on his head? Longer range? Upgraded lights? Arm attachments? My mind is quickly drifting back to the days when the world was still somewhat new and the possibilities seemed endless.
What should I do with my new robot? Let me know in the comments.

How cool! Our "local" Radio Shack may have what you need to build a battery pack, but with the Highland Games going on it could be a traffic nightmare getting there. You may want to grease the gears up with some non petroleum lubricant. With the one "eye" out you can call it Odin lol . I'm betting you'll give the cats plenty of exercise! lol

Now that was cool. If it was me, id try to place a wireless camera behind the red lens to watch on phone where its going lol. I could have fun with that

Imagine converting this to Bluetooth Controls (to control with a phone) and adding a camera to the head.
You should definitely upgrade the drive system, though...
Looks like a fun project for you to "geek-out" on!

I was nearly born taking things apart (took apart my older brothers watch at about 2 or 3 years old). One of the things I learned is I'd usually take things apart wrong, taking too many screws out from the wrong areas and finding a better way after doing it wrong. That never stopped me from jumping into stuff that I had no idea how to fix and often did more damage to it (no harm. It was broken anyway). Still loved to do it and credit those early years for my ability to fix things later in life.

No way! I actually had RAD 2.0! He was really cool. He actually went very well outside. You just changed the speed from high to low, and he was able to go over grass and things like that. Very awesome! The 2.0 version actually had a phone jack on the back of him, and we never could figure out what that was for.

0:57 the static on the robot is normal. Very awesome that you got into work. I’m not sure of the difference between the first generation rad and the second generation rad. Very interesting.

That’s when kids were still allowed to make noise😊. A true keeper. Brings back memories of wonderful years. You probably would want to grease all the gears. It would be also much quiter most probably so. Thank you for this funny and enjoyable video.

I had one as a kid. Man this brings back memories. Yes it does have a microphone function...and believe it or not, its no the same frequency as a walkie talkie....I remember using my walkie talking to talk out of the speaker. lol

What I have found to work good with heat shrink and small wires like that is put a couple wraps of electrical tape around the wire first then the heat shrink will seal up better

Nice toy ! Yes you can get battery holder for 2-18650 battery. To fix the voltage, This is easy. get 2 -3 amp diodes like 1N5400 and put in series. the band is cathode on them . the andoe will go to battery + and after 2 diodes the band will go to toy + and done. each diode will drop appx .75/.8 volts. you can test this with meter. diode will look like one their. just add more. use double sided tape to hold battery holder to toy. They make them holders in 18650 in 1/2/3/4 cell. series or parallel. you want 2 series . look for that . The outher battery you can use is 18650 LiFePO4 which are 3.2 v type. no diodes needed but the one in toy. I think the OG battery was 5 cell 1.2V NiCd AA cells. Haven't seen one in years . AA is 14500 size. The world switched to new standard . AA/C/D/N/AAA and more still made. just newer system. watch voltage when swapping them out. 14500 3.2 V cell replace 2 AA cell using dummy battery . and they make USB recharge AA/AAA/C/D /9V Li-ION now. My new solar lights have 1-14500 3.2V LiFePO4 or LFP cell. looks like AA battery . watch for that. Most solar lights use AA NiCd cell. look the same except different voltage.
