The m1911 is a us military side arm that was replaced by the m9 but some special forces use it but it's called the m45a1 the m1911 can chamber 7+1 45acp rounds but more modern magazines can take 8+1
Before the m1911 there was the 38 special it was a revolver holding 6 and you guessed it 38 special rounds it was used by the military until in the Philippines when the us were fighting Filipino tribesmen the tribesmen had swords shields spears and flintlock pistols and rifles and the tribesmen used bandages that were tight to slow bleeding and drugs to ignore pain the us military 38 special bullet were to small for the tribesmen and would take a whole cylinder to kill one tribesmen only there bolt action spring field rifles which was in 30.06 and could hold 5+1 rounds but it was a clip system so only 5 shots and shotguns called the trench guns holding 5+1 12 gauge rounds these were the only guns that were effective after the fighting the us military took notice of the fighting in the Philippines and how the tribesmen are able to be suicidal for there country and take 6 shots to kill so they replaced the 38 special with the bigger m1911 and yes a 45 acp Is bigger then the 38 special for people that thing revolvers mean bigger bullet.
After the Philippines and the replacement of the 38 special the m1911 would be in technically be in service for 100 years If you count special forces.
The m1911 had a sliding barrel that most modern pistols get the design from a sliding barrel allows for more reliable action for the pistol.
Btw if you hate the m9 now because it replaced the m1911 the m9 got replaced by the m17 and m18 if your curious.
