Now, let’s get something straight first up, the cars on this list aren’t necessarily standouts in their respective categories, they’re not the fastest or best handling, they’re not the most luxurious, they’re simply excellent cars that the majority of us have completely forgotten about.

But, as we’re recommending these cars and the $15,000 Aussie dollars budget is a bit tight, we’ve taken into account reliability, the cost of maintenance, their longevity, fuel consumption and their quality now that they’re all a few years old.

But we’re confident that if you find any of these with a full and thorough service history and the car is in great condition, you’ll be wrapped with what you end up with.

Also, even though this list is in numerical order, all of these cars are equal as they all offer something a little different, yes there’s a number 1 but it’s not necessarily the winner, unless you want it to be.

If your talking underated hondas, a Honda legend would be great. VTEC v6 AWD. not sure if it was a grey import or not. Hot tip for a underated 4WD, hyundai terracan 😁 it has a low range gear box, wagon, with factory Lsd front and rear, factory bash plates underneath

I know it's not too everyone's liking but the Toyota Rukus probably deserves a spot, it's a Camry engine in a practical wagon body and thanks to it's boxy tall shape it's actually a car you can genuinely walk into and sit down, great alternative for those with bad backs as opposed to an SUV.

You do not know how excited I got when you mentioned the Rio. I have the 1.4, which is lower in power I will admit, but I've always waited for you to mention my car and you finally have. I love my Rio, even though the 1.4 isn't as powerful as the 1.6, it's got plenty of consistent torque between 2000rpm to 6000rpm that makes it such a joy to dry. I love it.

The VW Passat CC, 3.6 VR6/4Motion. Phaeton platform not Passat (could be wrong on that) loads of fruit, very solid build and hugely capable all rounder for sub $15k easily. VR6 was such a good engine. I got sub 8ltrs/100km on the highway and a bit over 10 around town. A poor man's Panamera (5.7 seconds to 100kph). Just my 2 cents.

For SUVs, the Subaru Outback 2003 - 2009. Manuals have dual range and autos are pre-CVT. Very comfortable tourer and capable off the bitumen without using crazy amounts of fuel. May not meet the necessary level of obscurity to be called "under-rated".

Just sold my Honda Civic FD2 2006 2.0L to my neighbor, I been driving her for 6 years.. she’s super reliable never have an issue with the engine apart from AC…

Glad you mentioned the Kizashi. I've had my secondhand 6 speed manual sedan for 3 years, and now has over km on it. Still drives like new and gets great fuel economy. Only a couple of minor issues that have been easily fixed, mostly by myself.

I’d add in my newly acquired Volvo C30 T5 - cheap to purchase, quick for the class, comfortable, relatively practical, five cylinder sound, stylish!

For a big v6 sedan it's god damn amazing for the price.
