Vlado Perlemuter (1904-2002)
An unfortunately incomplete recording of Maurice Ravel's Jeux d'eau, filmed in 1966.
Historically significant because this pianist studied all the piano works of Ravel with the composer at his home in Montfort-l'Amaury in 1927.

Ravel played by a master (and the composer's protégé)…wonderful fluidity and crystalline sound!

Beautifully fluid, balanced, poetic. In my opinion, an ideal interpretation.

He is the professor of my professor, when I played Jeux d’eau, my professor has completely changed my interpretation and style, and give me some indications given directly form Perlemuter, which seems strange and unacceptable for me at first, but after watching that Perlemuter played, I understand everything. Especially the meaning and importance of rythme in the music of Ravel!

A very finely wrought performance - what a pity it is incomplete

wow! Too bad the vid is incomplete. BUT, one can definitely know that this performance captures Ravel's desired dynamic, regarding this song, more than many other performances.

It's nice to see Cziffra in the end ! 😁

Not my favorite Jeux d'eau in this recording, but I think Perlemuter expresses some of his ideas in this clipped performance better than his other recordings, and it is probably unique among everybody's interpretations for the particular care towards emphasis of beats in the rhythm to preserve the motive line... maybe a little too adherent for some people. Overall though, I prefer his late recording over this one.

Actually many pianists broke their fingers on this glissando...

I think people are just used to hear the piece played borderline rubato and drowned in the pedal. I certainly am :)
