Master of None - The Art of Silence

Master of None Video Essay

I watch a lot of shows on Netflix, as you've probably noticed. Netflix shows are curated pretty well, thankfully, and there aren't many that are downright terrible.

Some, in fact, are amazing. Master of None is one of these shows.

I mentioned how the most powerful scenes are completely silent, or at least mostly silent, and I think that really makes the small beats and nuances really hit home.

Of course there are montage scenes set to music in the show, but I don't really remember any of those. But, the deaf scene, the scene in the car, a several others I didn't mention, those have stayed with me for quite some time.

I could gush about Master of None all day, but I'll just say I found it to be one of the best comedy dramas I've ever seen. Smart, Hilarious, Heart Wrenching, everything.

If you haven't seen it and it looks even remotely interesting to you, just watch it.

Anyway, I made this video about a month ago, but I never found the right time to post it. I figured since posting my Spider-Man video was a little time-sensitive, I could post both that one and this one in the same week.

A little bonus for those who care.

Master of None is such a fantastic show, which I think not enough people are watching. It has wonderful cinematography, looks more beautiful than any other show and even some movies. But the thing I love about the show other than how it relates to us people of different ethnicity is how the background always feels alive. In most shows its just a backdrop but in this show it feels like a character itself, New York, Italy and even the scenes just in a park have a distinct relationship with the location that if you take the location away the scene doesn't work as well.

I loved season 2, so so much!! The characters were so real, fresh, heartful, etc. and I LOVED, "New York, I love you" because of the Representation for the Deaf community!! Thank you for this!

master off none is an series that cover many modern issues of the world today that no mainstream media wants to talk about: immigration issue, second generation american kids, LGBT community, deaf people's perspective, traveling and immerser new culture. I love this show so much, wish many people would watch it more. Thanks for the excellent video

I feel like some of the acting is a little iffy, but the show has tremendous heart. Mainly because the characters *feel* real after all the little moments and hokey dialog. The show's writing isn't like whip smart or anything, but because of that, there's this weird authenticity to it.

I was thinking of the Scene Where Dev writes a list of pros and cons about Francesca and you don't even hear him talk, he just writes them down. That scene was really memorable for me

I love the effort you put into your videos. Please don't lose sight of yourself when you inevitably and deservingly become famous. I try not to get attached to youtubers but the content you make despite being a small channel is amazing. Youtubers with millions of subscribers don't do this, keep up the great work Meyers.

Feels very reminiscent of classic silent films of the 20's and 30's.

I watched this video before watching the show and didn't plan on watching it, but then I watched parks and rec and came across the show on Netflix, noticed it had Aziz Ansari and I gotta say I really agree, besides the silence you mentioned I also really like how the show isn't afraid to just show us people interacting like normal human beings and slowly but progressively building relationships, I'm currently on episode 7 of season 1 and I'm really enjoying it

Although I admire the effort you put into the editing and visuals of this video, I think you could do with toning it down a bit. Save yourself some time while also conveying more information through the visual components. For instance the part where you talk about the moments of silence when Francesca is in Dev's bed, you showed a visually impressive shot of cut outs of Dev and his dad, which is honestly irrelevant. There is such a thing as over stylization.
