r/guitarcirclejerk is 50% Joe Bonermaster memes and 50% coherent, intelligent guitar discourse. The non-jerk guitar subreddits are full of cancer and should be avoided at all costs.

1:19-1:42 Is why people hate guitar youtube, and really just social media as a whole. Things that were done out of passion are now not just done for money but done in a revenue focused way.

Even channels I don't hate, like yours, hit a point where to continue growing the videos become more and more generic click bait that feels like its determined by what advertisers want more than any passion for the videos themselves.

I think it’s because viewers are SUPER SATURATED with endless shilling and YouTubers selling their souls just to get money or products.

“The new is a game changer” how many times a quarter do we hear that?

It’s less passion for the instrument and guitar community and more career driven. I get it, most of these guys are full timers, but as a consumer I’m tired of getting absolutely financially fisted for gear that has taken a massive nose dive in QC /overall quality.

There also isn’t any originality anymore. Here’s new gear that’ll revolutionize the industry. All my
Opinions are my own. Here’s a super processed jam track. Here’s why I like it and why you should buy it. End.

Rock and roll mentality is dead and buried.

The problem with Reddit is it filled with mostly social rejects and just people who are generally very bitter about everything. Also, most redditors tend to really hate anything that is related to “ business “ or capitalism per se as seen by most of them being communists/socialists.

It's not hate against guitar channels, it's hate against bad or poorly created guitar channels.
Some people think they put up interesting posts and it's quite simply not the case.
They either can present, or they can't play (infinitely worse imho)

I watch quite a few guitar based channels. My only issue is when a channel puts out a "How to play *this* song" video, and then over the next week a dozen other channels are posting how to play the same song. There are millions of songs to be learned. Please stop copying each other. I know each channel has a different way of teaching the same information, but please show us something not already taught on a dozen different channels.

I miss oldschool online forums. They've mostly died off but what has replaced them (Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, etc) do not really serve the same purpose.

It’s not just guitar channels. I watch a number of different kinds of channels and I hear the same thing. The anonymity of the internet has, unfortunately, brought out the worst in us. When we used to have to relate to each other face to face we were a lot more gracious because we would have to take responsibility for our words. When you hide in the shadows of the internet with your untraceable username, you are emboldened to be nasty. I seems to be the price we pay for this new world. I’m glad you are digging into this subject.

The problem is YouTube itself. YouTube was not set up from the beginning for creators to monitize video. The truth is Youtube was set up for YOUTUBE itself to monetize videos they got for free. I think many of music YouTubers issues come from trying to kludge together a system to make money from this.

The stuff I hate is when the youtubers are pretentious, condescending, know-it-all, or endlessly push their narrow opinions as if they should be "fact" for all musicians.

I also absolutely despise when youtubers do a gear comparison, declare that the cheaper thing is better (or just as good) when they don't know what they're playing, but then still try and justify why you should spend the 3-10x on the more expensive piece. Shull has done this on Les Pauls for instance. I can't watch him anymore because of his crazy defenses of truly mind boggling opinions (like how he won't shut up about how tube screamers are crap and no one should ever use them. If he was being memey it'd be one thing, but he's perfectly serious).

There are /r/guitar and /r/guitars because one of them is run by some truly vile mods. They've gone so far as mass banning people who post on competing subreddits. I can't remember which though. /r/guitarcirclejerk is really just a bunch of normal people getting together to try cope with the idiocy that goes on in the guitar community, and poke fun at the ridiculous hills people choose to die on. You get CRAZY responses, but then they often "/uj" and their opinions are perfectly reasonable. It's supposed to be over the top, by design.

I like genuine, humble youtubers who just like to geek out about gear and are accepting of the tastes of others. Tim Pierce, for instance, is a world class talent, but he's also so geniune, friendly, and an all around great guy that anyone would want to hang out with. This channel is another one: Landon doesn't care about being a snob. He cares about geeking out about playing guitar and trying random gear. Robert Baker is also one of my favs. Super chill and approachable.

Paul Davids is a tremendous talent, and all around genuine guy, but he just talks so far over the heads of most of his audience that I had to stop watching. He gets so into theory and advanced explanations that his content is really only suitable for people who just want to geek out watching him play or who have classical training (both of which are fine, but I'm just not in that crew).

ULTIMATELY: We all have to figure out what we want to watch, and just don't watch the stuff we don't like. I had to watch a lot of youtubers before landing on the small subset that check the boxes I like. It's OK to unsubscribe, and I think people forget that.

P.S. - I also hate when guitartubers push their own courses constantly. I tried a couple a while back just to see what they had, and they range from "fine" to "really dumb, " but even the good ones aren't any better than the Fender lessons that cost a fraction as much. For what they charge, you can get virtual lessons with an actual person over zoom, etc. I would also never risk any of Paul David's courses because I would truly fear that his beginner stuff would be far over the head of most beginners. He's kinda typecasted himself that way.

Many youtube channels are straight up cringe. every day its a stupid thumbnail that tries to get us to buy some thing. Reviewers especially seem so afraid to give an honest opinion on something because they believe that X company will no longer sent them free stuff to review.

I'm subbed to quite a few but watch the videos less and less nowadays. I think people grow weary of videos like "this store sent me 10 guitars so I can decide which is the best one" type stuff or the really pretentious shit like "When I started my Jazzmaster journey..." Even worse is it seems like as soon as one guy does a video on Jazzmasters (I'm not including Puisheen in this, his channel is always really informative and interesting) the rest of the usual suspects have a Jazzmaster video. It's all so repetitive and grating. I saw *someone* almost in tears of disbelief at the realization that rosewood or maple fretboards offer a minute difference in tone. I mean... Come on.

The guys like Stevie T or Scallon who are supposed to be "funny" are just flat out unbearable though.

I don’t get why ppl write hate comments when they can just not watch whatever it is they are complaining about. Most YouTube creators such as you Landon put their heart and soul into the content they put out. It always saddens me when far too many cross the line of constructive criticism and hatred.

As an amateur YouTuber I welcome constructive criticism. Specially, when it can contribute to improving myself and/or my content. In the end, I know kindness will always prevail.

"This is an incredibly lazy video idea" - my wife. Me: "Yeah, maybe, but I clicked on it, so good on Landon! It worked!" :)

The reason?

Perhaps because the overwhelming majority are just modern day infomercials with the sole purpose of selling/marketing to consumers

They contribute to the intense mindless consumerism that is never satisfied— the focus is on getting dopamine hits through gear acquisition, gear lust etc.

Once you get the gear, you get a huge hit but it depletes quickly and you start the cycle again

It takes away from the alternative reward system of actually playing the guitar and making music etc

The gear manufacturers benefit HUGELY as for the cost of gear they get unparalleled marketing access that would have cost an outrageous amount of money and an actual marketing department back in the 80s and most of the 90s

The YouTubers benefit as they get some money from their channel, and they get free or greatly discounted gear

Back in the 80s and into some of the 90s people were keenly aware of the cringe of informercials and the transparent marketing that it was

Today however ppl seem to have mentally regressed and welcome infomercials into their lives with open arms and apparently enjoy being treated like a consumer

But the consumer does benefit certainly from being exposed to new products that would have zero chance of being made back in the day as it would be impossible for a small maker to get something off the ground without a large investment etc

Reddit is weird. If you're in the right communities it can be really cool; but just like the rest of social media in general it can be a cess pit.

It's definitely not as bad as Twitter though. Or Facebook. Those are certifiably the worst.

I love guitar channels! I watch them on a regular basis. There are trends that bother me (like multiple channels all reviewing the same thing) but most of the things that “bother” me are not unique to guitar channels, and happen with any niche. What I love in particular about guitar channels is that they typically can give more varied information and experience with gear. Everyone has different ears and will have different tones, and I find that helpful in giving me more information than I could get as compared to some other product (like a camera, for instance). I think what irritates some people is seeing the shift from “hobby” review video to professional review video. It seems to me that some people have an irrational expectation that reviews should ONLY be hobbyist level and money and compensation should never enter the equation.
I think more people love them than hate them, but the people who hate them are just very vocal and ugly. I find many people appreciate the time and effort it takes to make a review video, and they accept the “reviewer economy” if it is disclosed openly and the video helps them.

For me it’s “content.” Just any guitar channel that feels like “content” and not a genuine outlet for thoughts and fun. I get that this has become a job for a lot of people, but the results just feel so hollow.

I posted a picture of my collection, with a very G rated joke about college education, office work, and buying guitars. Basically, the debt and time was a waste but at least I can buy some cool guitars. The post was received incorrectly in the most awful way, and was completely hijacked as a weird political argument by a handful of insecure people I can’t even understand in the slightest. I just want to have fun and enjoy guitars, it is all very light and breezy for me. Reddit, I see now, is deeply INTENSE if nothing else.
