Want to take your MIDI compositions to the level of "realistic"? In this video, I’ll show you how to bring your lines to life by using MIDI CC1 (modulation) and CC11 (expression) in Dorico. I'll also explain a bit about CC7's role here, too. Those two controllers are powerful tools that can add realism and depth to your music, transforming flat, robotic playback into expressive, dynamic performances.

I’ll walk you through the process of using CC1 and CC11 to control volume swells, reinforce articulation changes, and add overall musical expression that is often missing in the raw samples. Whether you’re working with orchestral strings, winds, or even solo instruments, mastering these techniques will give your music a more human touch, replicating the nuances of live musicianship.

In this video, you’ll learn how to set up and automate CC1 and CC11, and how to fine-tune their usage to create natural phrasing and dynamic contrasts. Whether you’re scoring for film or producing a personal project, this technique is essential for media composers looking to enhance their sound.

Sorry about the stutter in the playback! I guess you'll have to trust me that it sounded better :). It must have been a sampling issue as was pointed out. I'll see what I can do to fix that issue in the future. Thanks for alerting me :)

I usually use a breath controller to record CC11 after a track has been laid down. For me this works better than riding a fader. Obviously, I go back and do this again with CC1. It really doesn't take all that much time. Tweaks with the editor as needed!
