Dr. Rea have you found a dry cat food that meets your senior requirements for calcium and phosphorus? I have not been able to find a commercial dry food diet that fits these parameters. I currently have my cats eating HSD Oral Care and NOW Turkey Salmon and Duck Adult formula. Both have relatively low levels of calcium and phosphorus, but not as low as your chart suggests unfortunately.

This is wonderful information. I wish you were my vet. Thank you for everything you are doing. I'm trying to help my mom with her senior kitty's canned food. Her kitty likes the Hill’s Science Diet Sensitive Stomach & Skin Tuna & Vegetable Entrée. However Tanya shows the Phosphorus is .72, which is above the .70 dry matter limit. Should I switch to a lower phos food option? I noticed Tany's says the Hill's Science Diet Adult 7+ Tender Tuna Dinner has a phos of .54. I suppose it's better to switch to the 7+ (I think I just answered my question).

So I have a question for you as I’ve gone down the rabbit hole of dog food and unsure who to ask this question to. lol.
So the mineral/nutrition chart you have who is that chart created by? Something I have realized is that the foods that are formulated by vets and that are within range in the guidelines generally have low quality ingredients (purina, royal canin etc) and the boutique foods have much higher quality ingredients yet are more out of range in the minerals/protein etc. So I’m at this point where I feel like I have to choose low quality ingredients (by product meals, wheat, soy, canola oil lots of grains and low meat proteins) that the nutrition is within range or high quality ingredients with excess minerals so I’m not sure which is better lol I’ve learned alot from your channel keep up the amazing work! I know your enjoying farmina lately but my picky Pom won’t touch it 😭 is there a certain food you recommend for small breeds?

My cat stage 3 kidney disease June 2024
Hates all prescribed kidney diet from the vet office.
We tried hills, purina, royal canine from the vet she hates all of those wet and dry .
She was always ate purina adult wet and dry from the vet office.
But she used to vomit alot. Vet didn't discover her kidney problem, in 2019, 2020, 2023, only 2024 in June .
She had all blood work, urine tests all those years .
I wished I could have read the report myself and understood the meaning of all those numbers. Instead of relying on the vet to tell me nothing wrong with my cat, try hair ball gel, try Hills diet sensitive diet from her office .

I keep getting ads for Wild Earth Pets, who have created a vegan cat wet food called Unicorn Pate. They have added taurine to the food, and the article linked in their Instagram bio references a study done on cats fed meat vs vegan. Is it possible obligate carnivores can get their nutrition from plants? Can dogs be vegan?

I don't know if there are rules about where the AFFCO lable has to be, but I have the hardest time finding some AFFCO labels. Especially on Weruva!

I'm all about the health care "team" but we are the pet parents and if a vet gets their feelings hurt bc someone says I'm absolutely not feeding science diet, and they keep pushing then find another dr. No one should have to be like "I've brought you a list what do you think about it to placate a drs suggestion.
At the end of the day, we are the ones spending everyday with our fur babes and know them better and first and foremost they gotten freaking eat whatever is being offered. Doesn't matter the "brand" or nutrients or minerals if you cannot get them to eat enough-this is very idealized advice- at some point you are just grateful they ate anything. Alot of times you have to rotate brands for very picky eaters and i think that's important to keep in mind when you are delivering advice to the masses. Older cats lose weight sometimes quickly- not the other way around.

You should do a video on Green JuJu they have the same food for dogs and cats yes the same food very expensive. Goat’s milk your a vet you can join this company and get treats for the animals this company will do this for free for 6 months I believe. I can’t afford this dog food I sent them a email asking why so expensive the shipping was 44.00 just got a 6 pound of beef patties that was 50.00 saw the shipping and deleted my order. I’m a very low income disabled lady. It may make be a good video

Not on the list, is the #1 selling cat food, Purina Cat Chow kibble. The minimum calcium is 1.1%, phosphorus, 0.9% No meat, just "chicken by-product meal" and grains. I can see why we are told to ignore the ingredients. At least it is only $1.18 lb. for a 40 pound bag. Good eating for an obligate carnivore.
