The little switch at 11:22 is a BIOS select switch - this GPU has dual BIOS

The strange sound at 25:10 and 26:00 is not audibly coming from the GPU - it seems to be sort of interference my microphone is picking up.

I've run this card again today, it powered up OK first thing in the morning and I ran a free graphics demo I found called 'Heaven Unigene' for 4 hours and it was perfectly stable. I don't know how much this is pushing the graphics card (1080p ultra setting) but after a few hours the graphics card was running quite hot so it must have been doing some work. From what I can see, this card works just fine.

OK I got some info from the owner - I've also asked what connection he was using (HDMI, DVI, DP)

This is the info Gerard gave me

tried that card in 2 different systems and it wouldn't boot or be detected I honestly don't understand why it did this to it wouldn't boot up or be detected or give me a pic or anything I used that card to mine Ethereum with and it wouldn't mine or anything and now it works suddenly OMG when it gave me the problem the system frozen and crashed 3 times and on the 4th time booting it failed and stopped working for me.

Wow I guess I have to now try the wires on the psu or pci extender that I was using with this. I guess let me know how much shipping is back to Michigan is and if you want a fee for your time checking this card out you did spend time and your time is money so I am fine paying whatever fee you want. Again i saw the screen freeze and the card stop working, I was thinking of doing a heat treatment to the card but never did it and instead found you to check it out I am glad I didn't do one and sent it to you because I might of killed the card for sure doing one.

I stated in the video what I was happy to take in lieu of payment as that was the last of my MX4. Anything other than that would be a voluntary donation to the channel (always welcome)

So if anyone can work out any other reason it worked for me but not the owner then here is the place and time to suggest, otherwise it gets soak tested over the weekend and will be on it's way home next week. I will try it tomorrow on DVI. I already know it worked on my mining adapter in single lane mode

Really nice and informative repair video! I cannot understand how all of those gpus that fail are new high end gpus. I have a asus r9 270x and still runs like a clock with normal temperatures! Anyway great video!

Unigine Superposition is good for very new cards but it's only a benchmark so once it finishes you have run it again.
Unigine Valley is a bit older but also good for testing and can run indefinitely.
Both of them are free.

I love your videos I have learned a lot, I went through my old video cards and was able to fix 1, and was wondering if you had a heatsink for a Sapphire R9 290, bought the card new and after around 200 hours I replaced the thermal paste (Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut) put it back in my PC and it would come on then shut down after 2 seconds, I check my work and found I striped one of the screws around the GPU and I couldn't fix it.

im going back a few years here but In the past ive noticed that if your psu isnt powerful enough, you will get graphic artifacting (square pattern) and or black screen when the card is under full power. Mostly at windows start up, driver installation or playing a game. I dont know if that was the issue, but it looks like the card is fine. Nice video as always mate. top class.

I'm assuming that at some point in this cards life it went through an oven/heat gun treatment.
At 6:45 specifically you can see a pad where an IC would go. Now they normally come from the manufacturer without a IC on the pad and the solder will be the standard factory application dots, this has obviously gotten hot enough to puddle together indicating some sort of heat treatment was used.

Hi Richard,

A few possible situations for the GPU.

1. Because this was a mining card I can tell you from experience the the cooling must be 100%. If the GPU core was not cooled properly, once the mining software starts to run the GPU will immediately go hot and turn off. Once hot the card will not reboot until the card has completely cooled. The type and application of the thermal paste is critical. Some brands of thermal paste dries at different rates, so replace with cheap paste may get the card going for a while but eventuallycrash again. Mining cards operate at 95% of their rated heat tolerance with overclocks, 24hrs a day.

2. If running HIVEOS, any updates to the OS can affect a perfectly running GPU. Roll back the OS to the previous version. The same overclocks may not work with the new hiveso updated especially with the more modern GPUs.

3. If using risers with 2nd hand cards, the contacts must be cleaned prior to use. Do not use 2nd risers as they will cause all sorts of problems. Power connections to the risers should be the 6 pin connection and not molex or sata to power the riser.

I likely think the situation 1 is the most likely. I bought a R9390 Sapphire from ebay with crashing issues. Changed the thermal paste on the GPU core have had it mining perfect at 29MH 65° no issues.

I believe you fixed the GPU by changing the thermal paste.

Thanks,

MacGaverick 😀

Best wishes and thanks for the videos

Did you try slightly flexing the board or tapping it gently. It might be a cold solder joint that's not showing up lying flat on the desk. Although, that original heat sink paste didn't look to be nearly enough!

Very strange coil whine you got there, it shouldn't whine like that.

It's a PCIe 4 card. He needs to enable it on bios to at least gen3

I am trying to learn how to repair cards. For that reason I wish you would not shut off the video and go about searching for things on line or on the board with out letting us see the process. It is a learning experience for all of us. Thanks for the video.
