Whenever I think of Elton John I always think about his greatest performances, and this one always stands out, because he played his song straight and with the most seriousness even thought he played it with a bunch of muppets. He played it like he would with any other band, he treated the Electric Mayhem with the same respect he would with any other band.

I remember seeing this performance on The Muppet Show and being blown away by his showmanship at the piano. I was very lucky to have attended his recent tour stop in San Antonio, TX at the Alamodome on 10/29/2022. Him and his band rocked The stage and it was just an incredible show. Getting to see Sir Elton John perform live is a once-in-a-lifetime experience I will never forget.

I was only born in 2000, but I had a vhs tape of this particular muppet show episode that I watched religiously! When I was 4 years old, I thought he was just awesome and I wanted to BE him! I even passed on getting braces as a teenager cuz I had the same front tooth gap as Elton 😂

I'm curious as to the reason why he cut out a chunk of the lyrics. I guess the line about shooting a plane down and vodka and tonic isn't so family friendly. Also abbreviates it pretty much seamlessly for a half hour variety show.

Anybody know if it was the Muppet Show's house band backing him here?
