Number 5 is such a good tip. Especially working as an one man army. I am also an one man army and before any project, I always expect it to look as professional as commercial work made by an entire team. You can't always have perfect lighting conditions and you can't always create them one man, but you can end up with a pretty awesome result either way. And the customer will most often not notice the minor things you wish were different. So even though you've made minor mistakes or certain things you wish you could improve, it might not be something that creates value for the customer either way.

Great video and thanks for the salt water tip, I got a salt water tip in the summer and I hadn't thought about that!

Great to follow along the rough scetch of your process! Just finished shooting a similar documentary. Very nice to also hear your perspective on the expectation part. :)

What an adventure! Curious what exactly your expectations were going in, that part wasn't really clear to me

Kudos for the challenging project, venue, and rigors of studio build, Sjoerd. Aside from salt spray on lens, what major equipment challenges did you face — e.g., battery performance at low temps, (frequent peeing in cold 😊😊)? Quite a different environment from your Sony tropical island shoot. Reminds of your ice caving vids (crevasses).
Might have helped to name each tip along with numbering (picky, picky); e.g., tip 1 - use zooms. Don’t recall you having specs before. Cheers!

Great end result Sjoerd!
The timeline tip looks very handy. I have a documentary to shoot throughout the year and I was looking for good ways to organise footage and the way you approach it looks very efficient to me. So thanks on that already 😉
As for the rain covers, that's something that I struggle a lot even this last weekend while filming in the snow/rain. My rig doesn't fit any of those plastic rain covers you can buy on amazon, and I couldn't find anything specific for my BM 6kPro rig. So half of the camera was covered, half has not and I kinda managed it, but it has to be a better, simpler way than that 😅

Amazing, man!! Do you ever use a gimbal for branded doc work?

Great result and video about this process. My question is. How many batteries do you have with you? And right now you will take with you your fx30 or still Black Magic? Cheers

Question: did you write a script prior to shooting? Did you put together a shot list? Keen to know your pre production work on this one.
Awesome and inspiring video. Thank you for sharing:)

I'd change the thumbnail as the colors don't look inviting, they don't pop as they like to say, and a sailing boat as a main shot doesn't really meet most prospective viewers' expectation with regard to the keywork 'arctic' in the title. Just my two cents :)

How was your expectations different from what actually happened? You said you hard a hard time dealing with that

Very dope! Good insight. Right after finishing watching the actual docu, I was wondering, did you script the voice-over before, during or after you finished shooting? And did you let them write it or did you write it?

Lastly, was there any specific reason you chose to use this aspect ratio?

Thanks!

Hey Sjoerd, not really a question but i am starting out as a film maker in the netherands and want to improve my long form editing skills. But as you know as a new filmmaker its difficult to get access or time to shoot long projects. Would you maybe in the future give access to your footage to allow your fans to edit some of your footage and do a feedback video ?

Would love to talk hours with you about this and more projects, but i will start with one question: What gear did you bring with you?
Really difficult to estimate right?
