Why the iPhone 15 is Great for Android Users

the iPhone's New Chip is Great News for Android Users.

So Apple's just become the world's first company to sell computers with a 3 nanometer chip. This is a huge deal. Cuz these chips in theory can reduce power consumption by 50%. But Apple already knew that. Earlier this year, they bought almost every 3 nanometer chip on the planet.

Other company's can't buy one, and that's actually a good thing.

Cuz today, only 1 company is willing to create these chips in large quantities. The Taiwanese company, TSMC. Now they've been able to make these chips for years. But they've never sold them. Cuz cost of manufacturing was so high, no one was willing to pay it.

Especially not Android chip designers like Qualcomm. Why?

Well Qualcomm only makes a profit on selling each chip to a company like Samsung. So if the cost of making each chip goes up, their profit directly goes down. But Apple sells an entire phone. So they can cut costs in other places. And now that Apple's done that, the whole world

will adopt 3 nanometer chips faster.

Just because apple are using n3 it doesn't mean everybody is going to adopt it quicker. It may actually slow down adoption if the results of the iphone show it not worth it for the price.

From the Internet:
On September 7, 2023,  MediaTek and TSMC announced that MediaTek have developed their first 3 nm chip, volume production is expected to commence in 2024. [...] Apple may also announce its own very soon.

This is honestly what I sound like when I had to prepare a presentation but didn’t do the research

Just bc a chip is manufactured on a smaller architecture doesn’t mean it will be more efficient…it just has to do with the manufacturing process and how many transistors they can fit in a given area.

You forgot something important. The A17 3nm chip also has performance issues and adding the thermal throttling issue to it. This could mean that TSMC can make a huge improvement on the 3nm chips that future flagship Android phones will use. Current Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is at 4nm but surprisingly performs better than an A17 Bionic

"So they can cut costs in other places." Such as having their phones assembled by wage slaves in Asia. But other phone manufacturers do that, too. It's possible to buy "Fairphones" or "Shiftphones", where the workers are treated much better. But such phones are expensive by Android standards, though still cheaper than an iPhone. Apple's profit margins are typically around 20%, whereas other computer manufacturers have about 10%.

Theory and practice are two completely different things.

I heard one of the major reasons it wasn't adopted was because the quality and reliability just weren't up to standard. I really don't see the value in moving from 4nm to 3nm, phones nowadays are already powerful enough for 99% of people and have enough battery to last 3 days of normal use.

The things they should be improving is software efficiency and repairability while reducing cost.

Apple making everything expensive and have low durability and adding features most android and other users had:

and and absolutely TSMC has worked on their 3nm process since 2019 I think and the yields have steadily been increasing. Now the yields have reached decent numbers and the first batch of those has been monopolized by Apple. Apple paid billions to monopolize that manufacturing process. There is literally a line of manufacturers who want to produce at TSMC and at the latest nodes at that. They cant produce enough.

From the Internet:
What will 3nm process chips mean for you?
Smaller transistors, on average, provide improved performance, power consumption, and heat dissipation. Transistor density also increases with smaller transistors. Thus, with smaller distances to travel within and between transistors, electrons take less time to travel within the circuits, improving the processing speed. They would also need less energy to travel these shorter distances, reducing the input power required, and finally, with less movement, cause less energy to be lost as heat.
All this would imply better performance, battery life, and heating all around. This would mean devices with 3nm chips would be faster and last longer than those featuring 5nm or 4nm process chips from the same chip manufacturer.

But of course, there are more contributing factors to these metrics than just the processor or SoC being used. Chip design or architecture, the speed of the memory it is paired with, and other factors, including software, account for the performance of the end device - be it a smartphone, a tablet, or a PC.

Others will follow for sure, if they can actually get their hands on the 3nm process node. But Qualcomm is hot on their trail. They're even readying themselves to take on the pc market. This will really complicate things for apple since Qualcomm will be able to match apple neck and neck with the ARM for windows path they'll be taking. Almost all pc manufacturers will follow suit if everything goes according to Qualcomm's plan.

There are other ways to improve efficiency then making the manufacturing process smaller like improving the architecture or software. If I remember correctly that is what Nvidia did when going from the gtx 700 series to the gtx 900 (gtx 800 has the same architecture as the 900 but never had a desktop version it was laptop exclusive) both generations had 28 nm chips and similar performance but the 900 have a lower power consumption

"3-nm chips in theory can reduce power consumption by 50%". Well, in theory is not in practice. The iPhone 15 quickly developed a bad reputation for overheating, caused by the chip. This can have several causes, and Apple is working to fix it.
From the Internet:
Apple explained that recent updates to some third-party apps on iOS 17, like Instagram, Asphalt 9 and Uber, overload the A17 Pro chip's CPU, causing the iPhone to get warmer than normal. The company is working with third-party developers to implement fixes.
Re more general causes for overheating (the following was written for previous models):
If you're in a location with poor signal, your iPhone has to work harder to maintain a connection, which can cause it to overheat. Similarly, continuous data use, like streaming videos, downloading large files, or creating/restoring from backups can also cause overheating.
