Hi everyone,

Join me as I work with my mom on re-designing her front yard garden bed. We come to the realization that this is a SHADE BED!

Come along as we walk and talk and assess the area. We start to brainstorm ideas for a shade garden. Let’s learn together!

Enjoy!

Jen! What a fantastic video. Love seeing Grandma Patsy and her beautiful home. I can't wait for Part 2 because I know of spots in our yard that needs a boost of color but doesn't get much sun.

The little man would be perfect in that corner!

I also have a north facing front garden with deep shade, so i totally understand the struggle! My incrediball hydrangeas do amazingly well. Some other alternatives to hosta that i've found are brunnera and pulmonaria. Lamium might also be an option! Its hard when you are a color lover, but I have really grown to love the interesting foliage textures and patterns these plants are very low maintenance!

Hi Jen, I love that you're doing this for your Mom! In addition to the shade plants you mentioned, maybe take a look at astilbe, azaleas, viburnum, euonymus (you have those!). I also have a variegated gold/green compact hosta, unfortunately I don't remember the variety but I'm sure there are a few compact varieties. As you mentioned there are lots of nice heuchera/coral bells as well that could work. I do like the idea of boxwoods! With hydrangeas, most need some sun to bloom. I have Bloomstruck in my north facing back yard and they do well, but I think they would have to be closer to the front so they get some of that afternoon sun in order to bloom. I know there are some oakleaf hydrangeas that also do well in shade. Can't wait to see what you come up with!

Hi Jen, I just had another
thought! Does your Mom like Japanese Maples? You could find a dwarf size. I had one with too much sun so it didn’t make it. They like filtered sun & shade. Also dappled willow shrubs & trees have similar needs and are so beautiful with soft pink feathery leaves in the spring & variegated green/white leaves in the summer. I just planted a dappled willow in my semi shade bed. Can’t wait till the spring. I had two of them in my Canadian garden, I got a lot of compliments on them. 😊
