In Jamaica we call the fruit you picked to roast "breadfruit", and we also roast it on a wood fire, and then eat it as is just like you did, or (still after roasting) slice it and fry it with salt. If it's going into soup (think potato replacement) only then is it not roasted. The then British colonial rulers brought it to Jamaica to feed the African slaves, but, plus side, it's tasty and we still enjoy eating it!
