NMR Spectroscopy for Visual Learners

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is an extremely useful technique, but it has a steep learning curve. This video should hopefully give you a good understanding of the fundamentals, to help you get started with NMR. I cover the theory behind how NMR works, I explain where the spectrum comes from, and I go through examples where I analyse various NMR spectra.

Timestamps:
0:00 - What is NMR?
0:55 - How does NMR work?
2:43 - What nuclei can we see with NMR?
4:00 - Solvent
5:11 - Nuclear environments
7:26 - Why does environment affect peak position?
9:22 - Navigating NMR spectra
10:13 - Reference standard (TMS)
11:21 - Further reading
11:39 - Analysing a 13C spectrum (C3H8O)
12:53 - Proton NMR
13:31 - Peak intensity
14:25 - Peak splitting and 'N+1' Rule
15:39 - Analysing a 1H spectrum (C6H12O2)
19:21 - Analysing another 1H spectrum (C6H10O2)
22:11 - OH peaks and NH2 peaks

Hi everyone, I'm excited to announce that I now have posters available for the reaction schemes in this video:

Aliphatic reactions: rdbl.co/47y5oAk
Benzene reactions: rdbl.co/41W1qQM
Phenol reactions: rdbl.co/3NZc8QE

Perfect for learning organic chemistry (and supporting the channel at the same time!) 👨‍🔬

"You're an exceptional educator who has managed to cover the basics while delving into intricate details within a remarkably short span of time. Your ability to break down complex concepts into easily digestible insights is truly impressive. I've never seen anyone explain things so thoroughly and effectively in a single lecture. Your teaching style is not only informative but also engaging, making it easier for students to grasp and retain the information. Kudos to you for your outstanding effort!"

Beautifully explained. I appreciate how you actually go into reasoning on why and how things work rather than just stating definitions. Cheers.

I really wanted to thank you for this clear and concise explanation. I have my O-chem exam in a couple of days and for the life of me i couldn't figure out how to piece together a molecoule from a specter and vice versa. I knew all the teoretical bits about stretching and HOMO and LUMO but this practical part really puzzled me. Thank you for your part in educating the future chemists of the world and keep up the good work!
