I think many are missing the point of the song. It's about emotional abuse and the long term damage from it. The song very much resonated with me, and many others. And usually when there's that kind of age gap, there's an imbalance of power dynamics. Younger brains that are not fully developed are prone to manipulation and emotional abuse. That's why historically, much older males sought out younger women to keep in control.

I don't agree with you Perez, you clearly have never been a 19 years old girl. This happens a lot more than you might think, it's an important conversation to have socially, and yes it scars you for life. I'm glad the people saying "she needs to get over it" have never had to go through any trauma like that but that's now how it works. Writing about it, putting it out there is a way to get over it, and it might help others as well. It's the song I relate on the personal level the most in the album. And yes the 19 line is important. You might not like the song but I hope you reconsider the importance it can have for other women who went through the same experience.

Uhh no, a 19 year olds brain is not fully developed and a 32 year old mega star like John was at the time would’ve absolutely had a power imbalance over her. This take is putrid, try again

Yes, and whatever she says is going to offend someone somewhere. Did you hear a part of her Anti-Hero video, which I understand is autobiographical, got edited because someone was 'triggered' by the scene about her personal weight issues?

I do disagree with the people who call this grooming; it wasn't grooming per se. John Mayer wasn't in a position of power over her (e.g. he wasn't a trusted family friend, her teacher, her boss, etc.) However, even though it's legal, the law is a pretty low bar for moral/ethical behaviour. In other words, something doesn't have to be illegal for it to be morally or ethically questionable. There's such a major age gap in terms of life experience/maturity, etc. A 30+ year old man or woman has no business dating someone in their late teens/early 20s and many do so because those people are more impressionable and easier to manipulate. Yes, (again with the law) you're technically an adult at 18/19 but anyone who's at least seven years older than that knows your still virtually a child (and literally a teenager) at that age. As the older party, you should know better. I do agree that the re-digging up the Jake and now John storylines is a bit icky, but she is speaking to a real experience that way to many women (unfortunately) can relate to.

I understand what you’re saying but this are her demons

I agree! People hear these terms and run with it. Then they get over and inappropriately used.

Yeah she needs to let that shit go. I listened to Midnight's and she has a hard time letting go of the past and in previous work too she can't let go of the past it's sad
