The music was composed by Weng Ching-hsi and lyrics written by Sun Yi. Li Ge Record Company owns the franchise. It was first sung by Chen Fen-lan in 1972 or 1973 but was made famous by Teresa Teng's version later in 1977. The song is cited as, "one of the most famous and beloved Taiwan songs of all time."

Teresa Teng was a Chinese singer and a cultural icon from Taiwan, widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential singers in Asian recording history. With the career spanning 30 years, Teng remained widely popular throughout the 1970s, 1980s & 1990s up to the time of her death in 1995.

The song has been performed frequently around the world including famous singers and musicians Katherine Jenkins, Shila Amzah, Faye Wong, David Tao, Andy Lau, Leslie Cheung, Jon Bon Jovi, Siti Nurhaliza, David Archuleta, English vocal group Libera and Grammy Award winner American musician Kenny G.
