I don't understand the base case, and no one ever talks about it. It's not obivous at all to me how this works. If I let n = 1 and plug it into the equation, don't I get 1 + 3 + 5 + 7 + . . . + 1 = 1^2, which is obvisouly false?

1+3+5+...+(2n-1)≠n^2 w/ n=1 nor with n=0.
