This week I was joined by Danny Dorling, the Halford Mackinder Professor of Geography at the University of Oxford. We discussed his latest book, ‘Slowdown: The End of the Great Acceleration—and Why It's Good for the Planet, the Economy, and Our Lives’, the impact of COVID-19, and how to challenge imperial legacies in education.

He only uses the word 'depreciation' one time in his book. Economists ignore the depreciation of Durable Consumer Goods. The Laws of Physics do not care about the difference between capital goods and consumer goods. Cars and air conditioners wear out and depreciate. But our economists only subtract the depreciation of Capital Goods to compute the NET Domestic Product.
The growth in the purchase of Durable Consumer Goods since World War II has meant growth of Demand Side Depreciation and our economic analysis has become more and more distorted. Economists hardly talk about NDP.

GDP is used 39 times but NDP is not used a single time. How many automobiles have Americans trashed since Sputnik?
