As heavy as needed as light as possible, we tend to select our lines on diameters here in Europe .also takes out geussing. When it comes to spool capacity.Even tough im a European angler who fishes for Zander ( primarily) i can appreciate your content

It's easy. Dirty water and or heavy cover..heavy line. Clear water or finesse presentations light line. All top waters get braid!!!

Good to mention that different lines impact the action of the rod too. I tend to use stiffer rods with mono or fluoro lines and rods on the softer side for say braid while dropshotting or bass jigs in and around grass (frogging and punching aside, can't beat the feeling of using heavy tackle haha!).
Great tips Randy, awesome way to remind ourselves that line is a often overlooked detail!!

Great comparisons and makes me understand it a lot better coming from your experiences! Thanks Randy! Cleared it up a lot! I do both Iive bait and artificials down at the Florida Keys and now I have a better idea when to make adjustments. The only thing with the type of species down here are more aggressive teethier fish and also deal with coral structures that 6 to 8lb will be constant break offs!

Randy great video. I fish for Great Lakes steelhead very often and get almost scientific with line diameters for leaders. I really don’t think about it too much for bass fishing but you’re absolutely right about everything you mentioned in this video. I’m going to pay closer attention now!

Great timing. I'm stringing up a new speed demon spinning combo today. It's a medium. Leaning toward 12-15 fluro

I have 1 rod for bass fishing. 15 pound mono and a 3/8 ounce swim jig. Does the job well

I've been fishing a long time but never realized that flouro is a smaller diameter over mono. Learn something every day. Also, I wish I had enough money to fish a 25 dollar 110 on 4lb test

Down here in florida where I fish line choice is pretty simple. 50 lb braid, 15 lb fluoro and 65 lb braid for punching. There is just hydrilla everywhere and a few open water canals. The fish live in or near hydrilla, there are no docks, rocks, brush piles, etc. just miles of hydrilla . When you hook a fish it’s a very rare occurrence if it’s more then a few feet from thick vegetation. Also I oNly fish a few techniques when chasing these big fish so I don’t need a large variety of line sizes

My add to that would be which companies line you use. Seaguar 8lb test is much smaller in diameter than a line like Berkley vanish in the same pound class. Berkley might be actually 12 pound and sold as 8.
I use McCoy Mean Green mono because it’s diameter to pound test is smaller than other lines. I don’t just look at the weight rating, I study the diameter of each line before choosing.

Pet peeve(s) of mine so I have to chime in. The difference in line diameters at 10# is less than most can comprehend. Trilene XL measures 0.011" (breaks ?) Ande Tournament (used for IGF record fishing) checks 0.012" . PLine C21 co-polymer is 0.011" (breaks ?), Invisx and Tatsu Fluoro 0.010" (breaks ?), Smackdown Braid 0.080" (breaks ?) . 2nd pet peeve; Mono doesn't float. Both Mono and Fluoro are heavier than water. Braid floats. A salt water egg head (Mr. Silvestre) did an interesting test with mono/fluoro sink rates to 3 feet. (who's the geek that read that study?) 14 seconds and twelve seconds respectively. That would be if you sat there with your thumb up you keister and let it sink. No lure, weight, retrieve, etc. Yep sports fans, its called "marketing". Same as the less stretch horse hockey, both about the same, just a different strain curve. A caveat or two; coatings can influence buoyancy (wax on a fly line) AND this was for 10# discussion. There are benefits to each but that's for another rant rebuttal! LASTLY, use what every YOU like, what every makes you happy folks. Confidence is king. Tight lines!

Lighter is always better, I skip senkos in trees on 6 lb tatsu and am considering using 4 lb this year. I flip light ish cover with 15 lb tatsu too and might step down to 10 for moving baits. I only step up to 22-25 for swimbaits.

It seems like a lot of bass anglers use heavier line than needed. Definitely kills action of baits! My old home lake near Cincinnati OH was a little hole in the wall gravel pit & was gin clear. So I've always used lightest line I could get away with, plus I spent alot of time watching my baits in shallows seeing how my rod, reel movements & line size affected my baits action. It makes a big difference & get way more bites because of it! Maybe it's not a important in dirty water but I still go light as I can.

Light tackle for all my fishing for me. No need to use heavy ass line # test. Unless a professional tournament is understandable.

Braid: 20lb on casting, 10lb on spinning
Mono: 12lb on casting, 6-8lb on spinning

Panfish: 6 lb braid, 4-6lb mono.

Your observation over the years:
How line shy are bass in clear water (6-8ft visibility).

Anyone run the diawa samurai? If so, notice breaking at the knot easier than other fluoro?

Hi everyone. I'm a beginner and use YoZuri Hybrid co poly because I've read it's a happy medium. What is your experience with co poly?
