You neglected to discuss what the war meant for Canada and its future development as an independent nation. Having been attacked unsuccessfully for the second time in 37 years (1775) by the Americans, the War of 1812 helped create the country's identity. It brought French Canadiens and United Empire Loyalists together despite different cultures. Having survived a war which Thomas Jefferson had declared as "merely a matter of marching" against a foe with a population 10 times greater than their own, it was an early step towards the formation of a national mythology. The fact that the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 was a major national celebration in Canada while virtually ignored in the United States demonstrates that fact.

British policies towards the Americans, in the wake of the 1783 treaty that ended the The U.S. Revolutionary War (Stamp Act to Treaty of Paris) War were really what started the war of 1812. The British never intended on honoring American Independence and territorial sovereignty. The Invasion of Canada was a logical strategy that was used 4 times by the British and their American Colonists to settle a disputed border and frustrated trade and Native American affairs. The so called conquest of canada is a pure modern day reimagined theme of the war of 1812. The invasion of Canada in 1812 was not Barbarossa, and it was not a larger stronger nation using an aggressive tactic to take on a weaker neighbor. The invasion was about leverage, brining the British to favorable terms that would give the Americans control of the waterways, the Great Lakes trading region. We have to remember the Americans controlled Louisiana and the Mississippi delta and river, this effectively controlled the North American continent, linked up with the Great Lakes. There was no reason to conquer canada as it was never really even a tactical threat, the British never had it garrisoned until the War began. Its very possible some spoils would have been made if American had succeed in its invasion, however it would have come with a price tag to the British Empire which the Americans couldn't’ afford. The territorial aims of the War of 1812 were more so on the side of the British that absolute intended on taking Michigan, Wisconsin, and their attempts on taking the ports of Plattsburgh, Baltimore and New Orleans were aimed at holding waterways hostage for American Trade, even the Duke of Wellington attested to the fact that no territorial demands could be made in the War as the British had no significant victories in the War.
