Havana is losing her mind—literally.

From the very beginning, the government kept an eye on her because of her unique genes—rare blood type, strange physical traits (brown hair and silver eyes), and her inability to feel fear. When they took her, when she was only 12, she was injected with a drug: Nacalog, an experimental drug supposed to strengthen the immune system. What they didn't know? That in order to have nearly invincible humans, they have to nearly die first. And when Havana and the other kids escape the testing facilities, the drug spreads like wild fire. But not everyone has genes like Havana—most people die or fall into a state of paralyzed shock before slowly losing their minds. And it isn't long before these drugged people begin to outnumber the "naturals".

Havana and four other kids in the world have the genes to survive and fight off Nacalog—but it they think they're lucky, they're dead wrong. The government wants them back, to test for a cure. But Havana knows that more testing will lead to more deaths, and she has to keep out of their hands... as long as it takes. So she joins four other kids with the immune genes to fight the government and Nacalog—Ckoko, Newt, Zakkai, and Bram.

But there's one slight complication to Havana's plan—she may not be quite as immune as she thought, as her friends are.

She's tainted.

And she needs to find a cure, before the drug slowly drivers her to insanity.
