I’m glad to talked about the pros and the personal setbacks of being a solo indie gamedev - that back injury story sounds so painful :(

and here i am thinking of shifting my streaming to game developing (solo).. i used to think that as a programmer, an animator and love making story that it would be easy developing a game (solo) - i guess not 😅 - thanks for sharing ur experience, i might do more evaluations..

I prefer working solo mainly because I've had some bad experiences working with others. Also it's more of a hobby with income rather a full time job for me. I have a full time job already so this is a break from that. Good luck with your game! I hope you do great!

I have some games I work on solo and a game I work on as a group. Solo game developing is like such a pain at times and always lack motivation to do so although with a group its something I feel more passionate about and when my friends are working on the game it always gives the motivation to join in and help out with whatever needs to be done. Its nice to see how professionals view game developing

Congrats on the award! And omg, bulging discs... I got that too, starting to wonder how common it is among game developers. Took me a few months of physical therapy and a life-long devotion to core strength to prevent shooting electrical pain going down my right leg. I hope your recovery is swift. :)

I can confirm being a Solo Indie Dev is quite a challenge. Been learning Godot for the past year n a half now on my own. I got a few minimal sized game ideas I'd love to see come to life. But with school life and improv life on my weekends. It is such hard for me to find anytime to sit down for a few hours for me this time of year. Right now though I am challenging myself on making my very first minimilst sized game on my own to get out of tutorial hellscape. I am only going to go back to my udemy course within reason for resources if I get stuck. Thankfully which has been a fun chellgne within itself. I already wishlisted Lilly World and can't wait to hop into it though. Not sure where my minimist game is going to go right now, but i'ts going to be about the player plays a moonshard and they have to gather other piece that appears on the map in small doses for a fun arcadeish type game. Massive Congrats on the award as well Emily. Also the makeup work was really great.

I have been doing "Solo Game Development" for many years now, there are so much Up and Down things about it. Great video!

Your game concept seems super interesting! I am a dude but I grew up in that era of the internet. It would certainly be a nightmare if someone went through my chat history of that past, ha.

I agree with everything you said about solo game development. I am just a beginner, and only been working on a game for two months.. but I learned a lot of things on the way. Good luck with your game!

Good news! There IS a new company that made porting to consoles affordable. 2 bad news tho: i forgot its name and couldn't find it in 5min of search (thanks top 10 indie games articles and videos) AND from my small research i did month or few ago visual novels don't sell well on consoles nor mobile anyway so it might be best to stick on pc (and maybe mac). But if u ever make game from another genre then look up for the company i mentioned (2d platformers especially sell better on consoles than on pc, maybe even 3d platformers. Even indie titles of various genres can do well as seen by Thomas Steward showing his income on yt video)

Good points! Solo dev is tough, mostly awesome though as jobs go, and almost impossible to make any money at.

This all resonates so much! I will say that it's worth it if you're someone who can juggle all the things, it's just that we have to figure out the perfect balance day-to-day.

Re: deadlines - using external deadlines like showcases, festivals, and pitching to funds/publishers helps A TON!

By far the HARDEST part to me as a mostly solo dev is having it all rely on you. If you have an off day, the game like you said just... stops. It's brutal. What I try to do on days like that if I can is try to do business or marketing things, small things. That way, I don't feel like I just lost a whole day 🥲
