Imo it really doesn't add up that this is somehow the same entity as Navid Naghaban's character in season 2 onward. Shadow King here has a few possible characterizations: he's a sensuous, perverse sort who delights in the opportunity for seductive mania the way "Lenny" acts, OR he's actually without personality, just a disembodied force for malevolence acting through David's psychological impression of Lenny and therefore appearing playfully sensuous to match Lenny's personality (this scene depicts this version well, since it shows Lenny's form flickering to the grotesque, corpulent Devil with the Yellow Eyes). What I'm not sure works so well for me is the idea that he's actually a highly cultured evil gentleman pretending to be Lenny and the Devil with the Yellow Eyes -- genteel composure doesn't really match at all with either of the forms, between wicked seductiveness or revolting horror. I rather preferred it when the Shadow King's true form was this bodiless, soulless, eldritch evil manifest in whatever psychological concepts the host bears (old childhood stories that scared David, for instance, or of course David's friend Lenny) or momentary glimpses at the truth of what he is, nothing more than a grotesque monstrous creature. I just don't buy it as much that he's actually a suave gentleman.
If anything, why not just have Naghaban's character be little more than another host for the eldritch entity of the Shadow King, the way the comic character is? That way we get his admittedly charismatic performance in tandem with the more thematically consistent idea of Shadow King as pure horror.

Aubrey...you are simply THE best, at whatever you put your mind to. It's a wonder to me, that you did'nt land the role of 'Rose the Hat' in Dr. Sleep. GOD that would've been awsome. Rebecca Fergusen was...'ok'...but YOU would've brought that character to such a level of Meleficience...it would've literally blown Jack Nicholson's legendary 'Jack Torrence' performances R.T.F. out of the water.
