My little one of 6 years passed away last thursday and I was looking for comfort via youtube videos of hedgies. Thank you for rescuing your little one. It was gut wrenching seeing my little guy not eating (refusing to eat liquid cat food via syringe), not drinking water, barely moving his paws, and finally going into the long sleep.

im so glad that you went and got the hedgehog, cause for all we know that person could've thrown them out in the wild if nobody else stepped in and took them

Congratulations on your new hedgehog! Keep learning to give Ember her best life. I don't know much about hedgehogs, but as a hamster owner who are corpuscular/nocturnal, I recommend resisting bothering her while she is sleeping. Wait for her to wake up on her own moving around the enclosure before attempting bonding activities, try dimming the lights in her area so not to have artificial daytime at night (not great to videos, but better for her well-being). I think the same premises of prey animal bonding apply. Let her sniff you, put soft items you have rubbed your hands on in the enclosure, resist scooping her up for a few days, try hand feeding her to gain her trust. Welcome, Ember!

Hedgehogs will pee and poop while they run, so the wheel and herself will be dirty, so it usually will be a better idea to have a litter box at the bottom to make cleaning easier

I definitely recommend a big litter box underneath the wheel. In one night my hedgehog makes a MESS which is much easier to clean with a litter box

also!! very important not to use water bottles ive heard horror stories of their tongues getting stuck and even ripped off. lastly, dont worry about the hissing, any noise or touching they need to get used to. My hedgehog always hisses when picked up and then realizes its me and calms down

Maybe she should grind up the mealworms and sprinkle it on the cat food to get her to eat it? I know nothing about hedgehogs but this seems like a universal trick for animals when they aren’t eating. I’m really excited to see her expand her animal family ❤

rescuing animals is not an easy feat to take on, so i just wanna say it’s so good to see how you really work hard to give animals a better chance at a good life. we recently took in a stray dog with a broken spine, and it is not easy! so i see you girl, you make so much room in your heart for these little animals. ❤

Looking forward to seeing more of Ember. Seeing how scared she is though I would probably leave her alone for a couple more days so she gets comfortable in your home before handling her again, but I don't think it's gonna hurt to handle her right away I just thought it might just be a lot for her to get used to at once. ❤

absolutely love what you did. alil info for you. the claws and spikes will get caught in that material lining it. best to use fleece blankets like you do for your piggies. for the wheel, find a pan that it'll fit inside and overlap. then look for horse pellets, we have them at a store called tractor supply in the usa. as the hedgie pee's in it or poops (while running on wheel) the pellets will break down to a fine dust over time. i use a guinea pig house that's plastic and see through for the bed, add extra fleece inside for it to cuddle into. that wet cat food treat you got, they won't eat it. I find cat food or dog food, or even shredded chicken/tuna in packets. I haven't found many cat treats that our hedgie likes. but i do get a catnip spray and cat nip and spray the toys and area with it. don't be surprised if the hedgie never gets used to being held or picked up. Ours came from a similar situation as your's, and he was 2yrs old. He's still grumpy and doesn't like being messed with. as for the food, hopefully by now its eating it. But, I got cricket powder and sprinkled it ontop, as well as some flax seed oil. Thank you for rescuing that baby. <3

For bonding advice when I used to have a hedgehog, the best thing to do when they were scared is to put an old T-shirt with them in their cage!❤

I had my hedgehog for 6 years and I loved him! He passed last year and I liked the premade wheels but I used some PVC pipes and a 10 inch circle with grip for the wheel part and it worked so well! The size was great and it was so quiet compared to the store bought ones :)

Such a sweet girl, it will take time but she will get used to you. Once you are both more comfortable they say to hold them without a blanket it makes it easier for her to bond with you. The other thing is they absolutely hate being woken up lol, they will hiss and they get very very grumpy. For this being your first hedgehog u r doing phenomenal

HEDGEHOG!!! Love every time you help a fur baby in need. Cute little huffs. I don’t know about how your hedgehog will react, but my hedgehog won’t eat mealworms any way but live. Also, those pom pom balls are something I wouldn’t personally recommend for hedgehogs. Anything she could rip apart and swallow little bits of. Hedgehogs don’t have strong jaws. I compare it to baby proofing. If it’s safe for a baby, it’s safe for a hedgehog. I also use really small puzzle toys like a niteangel treat ball or hamster foraging toys. I’m sure you’ll be a great hedgehog owner!
