In my 10th grade HS Civics class (1966!), our textbook listed ten characteristics of a modern civilization. One of those was a mobile society.
Unlike the U.S., China recognizes the importance of inexpensive means of rapid mobility for the economic development of a nation. A seven-hour trip from Shenzhen to Shanghai costs around 800 yuan, or about US$112.00. The distance is roughly 1, 200 km, or 745 miles, similar to the distance between Atlanta and NYC (881 miles). Amtrak for Atlanta to NYC is US$131.00, and takes about 18 hours. To fly the same distance costs $99 (Expedia discounts, if you can find one!) and takes 2 1/2 hours. Plus TSA lines. Plus other delays typical of flying. Plus environmental costs that don't happen with electric train transport.
China is also among the global competitors to develop Maglev train technology, which effectively takes trains to speeds comparable to flight. Already the world leader in high speed rail, we can expect China to be among the first to attain a network of trains capable of speeds in excess of 600kmh (370mph).

Nothing equals the efficiency and economical way of travelling by Train. Need advanced manufacturing and the technology to travel at 1000km/hr or even more for International Travel.
