Now for the "other" #1's that failed to top the "official" charts in 1986. Amazingly, only one record topped the NME charts only; the remainder were all unique to Melody Maker. And so without further adieu:
- "Only Love" by Nana Mouskouri
#1 on Melody Maker for 1 week - 08 February 1986
(Blocked "officially" by "The Sun Always Shines On T.V."; was also kept at #2 on NME; the Greek songstress' only single to make #1 on any UK chart)
- "Absolute Beginners" by David Bowie
#1 on NME for 1 week - 29 March 1986
(Blocked "officially" by "Chain Reaction"; likewise peaked at #2 on Melody Maker; the reverse situation of all other "other" #1's in this year)
- "What Have You Done For Me Lately?" by Janet Jackson
#1 on Melody Maker for 1 week - 10 May 1986
(Blocked "officially" by "A Different Corner, " plus "Rock Me Amadeus"; NME also saw this go no further up than #3)
- "On My Own" by Patti LaBelle And Michael McDonald
#1 on Melody Maker for 1 week - 17 May 1986
(Blocked "officially" by "The Chicken Song"; also got no higher than #2 on NME)
- "Sledgehammer" by Peter Gabriel
#1 on Melody Maker for 2 weeks - 31 May-07 June 1986
(Blocked "officially" by "The Chicken Song, " then "Spirit In The Sky"; plus "On My Own, " "Lessons In Love" by Level 42, and two future Melody Maker #1's; finished at #2 on NME)
- "Holding Back The Years" by Simply Red
#1 on Melody Maker for 1 week - 14 June 1986
(Blocked "officially" by "Spirit In The Sky"; also peaked as high as #2 on NME)
- "I Can't Wait" by Nu Shooz
#1 on Melody Maker for 1 week - 21 June 1986
(Blocked "officially" by "The Edge Of Heaven"; likewise #2 on NME)
- "Sometimes" by Erasure
#1 on Melody Maker for 1 week - 13 December 1986
(Blocked "officially" by "The Final Countdown"; like most of these "other" toppers, this petered out at #2 on NME)

Notice how many Melody Maker-only #1's in this year also topped U.S. Billboard's Hot 100 . . .

Conversely, here are those "official" #1's that failed to make either of the "other" charts:
- "Rock Me Amadeus" (Melody Maker - #2)
- "Spirit In The Sky" (Melody Maker - #2)
- "The Final Countdown" (Melody Maker - #2)

Most of the UK number 1s are more stupid than the US number 1s... The US people have a more decent taste... and the British had bands like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Queen but the US cared more about them!
