Review of Nye starring Michael Sheen as Aneurin Bevan. Tim Price’s new play covers Labour politician Bevan’s life story and his part in the foundation of the NHS. (Warning: if you are unfamiliar with this historic story, you may find there are spoilers in this review.)
Cast also includes Sharon Small, Roger Evans, Tony Jayawardena and Jon Furlong. It is directed by Rufus Norris in his last production as Artistic director of the National Theatre, with set design by Vicki Mortimer, lighting design by Paule Constable and video by Jon Driscoll.

I saw Nye here in Cardiff yesterday. It was the first time for a long time that I left a piece of theatre in tears.

A great review! I saw Nye twice: at the National Theatre and then in Cardiff. I also saw it in the cinema. I could not get enough of it. It was just as you describe, moving, at times funny and charming and wonderfully Staged. Michael Sheen was perfection in the role of NYE Bevan.

Good review! Yeah I really liked how Tim Price balances these different aspects, which seems like it could have just been too much or one side would've lost, but it didn't and there was so much heart as well as factual things in there. The set design using hospital curtains and a bed throughout in interesting way, all of the other actors that brought so much as well. I really enjoyed it a lot.
Nye was such an important figure, It's such a shame that US doesn't seem to teach about him in our schools.

Saw it last night and thought that was a great and fair review. Like you I think the other sniffier reviews criticise it for something it doesn't claim to be.
And no, you weren't the only one with a tear in their eye at the end.

Lovely review! I saw Nye at the Wales Millennium Centre when it opened there about a week ago and agree with everything you said wholeheartedly. I particularly loved the library scene and the musical number. Michael Sheen is, at least in my opinion, the most exceptional actor of our time. By the end there really wasn't a dry eye in the house and everyone was on their feet, cheering and clapping. Best night at the threatre I've had so far.

Just watched Nye in Lancaster 29th of June 24, with lump in throat. It was fantastic, and right after it finished, someone behind me shouted "don't forget to vote Labour on Thursday!" to applause.

Michael Sheen keeps upwards from strength to strength - incredible. I can never get to see these productions so have to live them through reviews until their recordings are available...though it's not the same as being there.
How many of us wouldn't be alive now if Nye hadn't fought for services to ensure our lives? Interesting that one of the architects of the r*pe of the NHS was Tony Blair, also once played by Sheen.
