Typhoon Nanmadol has created havoc in the southern island of Kyushu, Japan. Authorities have asked nearly 3 million residents to evacuate. Japan's meteorological industry has issued a special warning that the region is at risk of landslides, torrential rains and following that all the trains, flights and ferry services have also been cancelled.

Today, those “end-time” or apocalyptic beliefs are still embraced by different religious entities around the world but the majority have stepped away from the beliefs so popular in the Middle Ages. I’m pretty certain, having read the teachings he espoused, that if Nichiren Shoshu were around today he would certainly have been diagnosed with a personality disorder or two. Luckily, for most of us, science and government agencies provide us with scientific data to help us understand these calamities. I’m sure my Japanese friends will be all right, as they have faced these natural events for thousands of years—like the rest of us.
