We Spent 24 Hours on a Family Farm Homestead and Here's What Happened

We spent 24 hours on a family homestead farm stay at Dogwood Hills guest farm in Harriet, Arkansas. Ruth and her daughter Grace start us out with farm chores included milking cows and feeding adorable animals. We learned about the hydroponic fodder that the family grows on site to make sure the cows get proper nutrition. After a few chores we head in for a farm to table breakfast of pumpkin waffles and chi syrup with bacon and eggs. Dogwood Hills has two ways to stay, a converted school bus and a three bedroom home. We go hiking with the goats and donkeys and find a giant mushroom that we are not quite sure is edible. Back at the barn we enjoy another farm to table dinner with local pork chops and pumpkin risotto.

4:59- Yep, the dog and cat were both united in lapping up that split fresh milk!

BTW, the phrase came from one of Aesop's Fables in which a farm girl had just finished milking her cow and had the milk in a ceramic urn balanced on her head while walking back to the barn when she daydreamed about separating the cream from the milk to make butter. Then exchanging the butter for a laying hen. Then having the laying hen lay about a dozen eggs which would all hatch into chicks (with one baby rooster and the rest hens) which all grow up to would provide her an entire barnyard of chickens which she'd sell to the butcher. Then would use the funds to buy the finest purple linen gown to wear to the harvest festival. Then when the men would try to court her in her new fine purple linen gown, she'd toss her head and pass them by! Yep, when she tossed her head, the filled urn of milk fell right off and spilled on the ground. Then she cried her eyes out to her mother. However her mother was a wise and experience farm wife who advised her not to cry over spilt milk and not to count her chickens before they'd hatched! Farmers down the ages have known that there's a potential for one's efforts failing at ANY step of the way so that's why they often don't pin everything on every single daydream coming true! At least the milk that Cody had wrought didn't go to waste but made the dog's and cat's day!
BTW, I like how all the farm animals get to run around the grass to feed and only get brought into the barn for milking, etc. No doubt the cows are happier (which likely makes the milk taste better than compared to milk from cows who spend their entire existences in factory stalls and never feel the wind)
Thanks so much for showing us this! Farming is by no means an easy venue but, at times, it can be fun!

I loved, loved this episode. It reminds me so much of the farm that my granddaddy had. I always helped him with the animals when I would visit.

Absolutely enjoyed watching this video. It was lovely. I could see you two settling down some day and owning your own boutique farm with an Air B&B.
