How to Divide and Plant Echinacea (coneflower) Quickly

Planting perennials need not be complicated or time consuming. This whole process took just 2 minutes. There are a lot of different ways to do this (I usually use a shovel) but the important thing to know is that you can often divide a perennial right out of its pot. Once you do this a few times you gain the confidence to do it more quickly. Most plants are less fragile than you may think. These are echinacea (coneflowers). They are sun-loving and great pollinators--especially for monarchs, which are increasingly becoming endangered.

My goal is empower as many people as possible to get out there and get their hands dirty. Subscribe to my channel to follow along with my clients and my own continuing gardening journey. I'm in zone 6 but most of the principles apply.🌺

Plant division is easy peasy… not complicated at all. This process has saved me money.

Mine are all one root ball in the planter, but appear to be branching out new stems. Can I just cut thru that and not cause damage?

If you have established Echinacea and are moving, can they be dug up and taken with?

Oh, come on. Those aren't even the same individual plants. They're sown/bunched together and sold in pots like this so they look bigger so people will buy them. A plant that has spread with rhizomes will take much more effort (to the point of using snippers) to take apart.

They’re flowers, not grizzlies. Why so combative? 😂
