Saint Michael’s Abbey (Sacra di San Michele) is an architectural and spiritual masterpiece that embodies the richness of history amidst the beauty of nature. Located on Mount Pirchiriano in Val di Susa, near Turin, in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy, the abbey sits atop a towering mountain peak, making it appear like a medieval castle guarding the surrounding valley. Built in the 10th century, it is a unique blend of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, reflecting the genius of medieval craftsmanship.

Upon reaching the abbey, visitors ascend the famous Scalone dei Morti (“Stairway of the Dead”), a stone staircase flanked by arches and old tombs that once contained the remains of monks, adding an aura of reverence and grandeur to the place. The Porta dello Zodiaco, a meticulously carved marble portal from the 12th century, greets visitors with its beautiful zodiac-inspired engravings.

Inside the abbey, one can admire remarkable frescoes, such as the Annunciation from 1505, along with other artworks like the triptych by Defendente Ferrari.

Additionally, the abbey’s unique location, overlooking the towering mountains and Val di Susa, provides visitors with breathtaking natural views, making it an ideal blend of spiritual and natural beauty.

The abbey is not only a historical site but also a cultural inspiration, having influenced Umberto Eco in the writing of his famous novel "The Name of the Rose". It is also an important symbol of the Piedmont region and a must-visit destination for history and nature enthusiasts.
