Why Rita Moreno’s name rang through Spanish Harlem in 1962

Transcript: Liz Torres told me this wonderful story about the night I won the Oscar. It was very hot. So all the windows were open and you could hear the televisions on. And she said, when my name was called – “Rita Moreno in West Side Story!” – everybody started yelling out the windows, “se la comió, my God! She made it! She made it!” When she first told me that story, I started to cry because it meant so much to me that I meant so much to them.

It’s still baffles me she was one of maybe a couple Latino actor in that whole movie!! Why did Natalie Wood even get the role of Maria in the first place? She didn’t even sing, because her voice wasn’t right for it and they had to dub in a good singer! 🤦🏽‍♂️ plenty of latina actors who could have easily filled the role and sang it well too! The new one they did was great, though and I’m glad Rita Moreno was in it too. I would have been so disappointed if they didn’t give her a part in that movie.
