Making Vice Jaw Protectors - Making Your Own Jewellery

Having an engineers vice in your jewellery workshop is an important tool to have but the jaws do need a bit of protection. Not from what we put into the vice but to protect what we actually put into the vice.

The jaws are usually rough, serrated or heavily textured to help grip but this can cause unwanted marks on our metal or the tools we put into the vice.

Here, in this 5 minutes film, Andrew shows you how to make simple jaw protectors that are quick and easy to make and cheap enough to replace when they too get marked and worn.

Andrew shows you many hints and tips that he has gained from his experience as a professional goldsmith.

Love learning to make tools like these. My 1mm set aren’t quite as pretty as Andrews (need another 15 years or so) but they work great. The fit was a bit snug so I need to lighten up on the next set and may try .75mm (that’s 20ga here in the US).

Morning Andrew. This vid works just fine but the vlog is still refusing to play nicely.

Great simple method, I thought you be cutting and soldering the copper. Thanks

Thanks Andrew! What thickness of copper have you used here? Where would you suggest a good place (in U.K.) to purchase copper sheets from? :)

Thanks Andrew. I am making these tomorrow. I wondered, do they transfer the pattern to your work after they get the imprint on them? Or does it take a while for them to get that imprint on them?
