The reason why a Rolex is so expensive is the same reason Rolls Royces cars, Louis Vuitton bags, Bollinger Champagne, etc…. Are so expensive. They’re status symbols, they’re an expression of wealth. Yes they are also superb quality products but you can get the same quality for less, however the lesser product wont get you the same status and respect.

Considering you now have $300 homage watches that get you 95% of the experience at 1/50th of the cost, I'd say with Rolex it's historical brand equity and MARKETING

I think the reasons are interconnected
1. waitlist/exclusivity - physically hard to get hold of (at a good price)
2. brand recognition - desirable name, you don't even need to be a watch person to know Rolex
3. massive target market - means easy to sell and many watch enthusiasts are looking to make money off them

If you really want a Rolex then go to Japan, it has big market for Rolex and always on stock with no AD bs like in USA or other countries and it's cheaper like Switzerland.

1. It's portable. You carry it around on your wrist.
2. It is secure. Doesn't fall off your wrist easily.
3. It's effortless. It has a transparent glass on top which let's you tell the time easily.

Rolex is $$$ due to lux branding, artificial scarcity, aspirational pricing. Worse off, the servicing is ridiculously priced, and makes you pay more than the watch, if you want to keep it functioning top notch.

I use to fix watches in the past and always found that other watch brands that are some what cheaper have better guild quality than Rolex and cheap to maintain
