GO:KEYS 3 and 5 CANNOT Play Midi files from USB drive

You can connect a commercially available USB flash drive (up to 32 GB) to the USB memory port on the GO:KEYS 3/5.

You can use a USB flash drive to do the following:

Play back audio files
-Record your performance
-Back up or load your custom settings
-Export data (scene, chord pattern)
-Import data (scene, chord pattern, style, tones, drum kits)
-To play audio files on the GO:KEYS 3/5 or to import data downloaded from Roland Cloud, you will need to format the USB flash drive first and save each file to a specific folder. Follow the steps below to format the USB flash drive.

NOTE: Backup operation can also generate folders. If there is data on the USB flash drive that you wish to preserve, execute a backup operation to create the necessary folders without erasing existing content instead.

Connect your USB flash drive to the USB memory port.
On the Utility Menu screen, select “Format” and press the [enter] button.
A confirmation message appears.
Use the cursor [-] [-] buttons to select “OK”, and press the [enter] button.
If you decide to cancel, select “Cancel” and press the [enter] button.
Once initialization is finished, the message “Completed” is shown and the display returns to the Utility Menu screen.
* Never turn off the power or remove the USB flash drives while the screen indicates “Executing...”.
* When initialization is finished, the necessary folders to use the GO:KEYS are created on the media.

Hello. First, thank you for the videos. There are two different midi file formats: 0 and 1. My guess is that the Roland might play the format zero files which come in only one channel. In other words, all the channels are combined into one. Have you tried Saving the midi files in format 0? In addition, it may be, that it only plays midi files that are contained in the route directory. No subfolders. I’m speaking from past experience with the Roland Juno D.

And another 'curveball' from Roland. Just had a Roland Gokeys 5 for Christmas as a casual use board. (My first Roland purchase since a Jupiter 80 some years ago which they dropped supporting almost immediately). Connected it to my Ipad via USB cable and can play synths on the ipad through the boards speakers or it's headphone socket. All 'fine and dandy'. However not happy (and checking the MIDI Implementation manual confirms this) that the GoKeys 5 neither transmits or receives MIDI Clock so any synth app that can time sync i.e Korg Wavestation. In 2024, WTF. (Unless anyone else knows different). Why does Roland do this to us? The MIDI spec and midifiles have been around a long time, c'mon FFS...Basics. Perhaps I expected too much.😏👍

Hi Phil. Have you checked the midi file extensions of the files you're trying to import? .mid and .midi are both midi files but could be the problem on the Go:keys. Just a thought!

The go keys has its own custom midi format with some additional compression. It’s not the same as a generic midi file. *speculation time: it may be possible to play a gm midi file from a daw either over usb midi or bluetooth midi and record on the go keys?
