Your average ganster/thugster/gang banger/swag magnet on the streets that attacks you probably isn't going to be an experienced grappler who even understands the difference between a straight armbar and a regular armbar. Just because guys play berimbolo, de la riva, ect. in competition DOESN'T mean they don't have a solid closed guard, solid mount, basic fundamental BJJ.

I know there's been a lot of Lloyd Irvin hate but there's no denying he made Cornelius a monster.

In Copa Pódio, Keenan was the lightest and he fought against the top black belts. Give him time. And about his top game, he has amazing leg drags, and puts a lot of pressure

Also it's so nice to see Keenan not in a tli gi and to see him finish a Miyao brother with an actual submission.

the way i see it- this is a fun SPORT to watch, i love it- I have seen more spectacular matches, however i train specifically for self defense. This is not self defense oriented, unfortunately it may fair extremely poorly on the street, especially if they do not train punch blocks regularly. oos!

well, thanks for that wonderful and thoughtful opinion

You can't call somebody your rival when they are multiple weight classes below you. You should be able to beat them, that is expected. The fact that most of their matches are extremely competitive shows.

I agree, super guards players nowadays, and it will probably balance out with passers soon

But for guard pulling - Its not so much about a reward, but more so about the fact that it is allowed. Conceptually, the "takedown" was a quintessential aspect of JJ. The allowance of pulling guard has bypassed that step, which was an integral part of the art. It has always been my opinion that takedowns were just as much apart of JJ as the ground tech. Did ppl forget this, are ppl scared to stand up?

I dont prefer this style of jiu jitsu, but i appreciate and respect it as a style. And by the the way, this could work in a street fight. Between a jiu jitsu guy and a street fighter . It would be easy. People also said technics like the triangle and closed guard never would not work in a real fight, but have been proven wrong.

i agree with you. i just see that you're finding less and less top level guys who are winning at a high with those same basics that the guys from 10 or 20 years ago used to win with. of course that's not to say that they don't work or that you don't see them in play from the likes of kron and such. even keenan uses closed guard..

Keenan is one of the best Brown Belts in BJJ!

Till this day this is the most impressive move i ever saw in bjj. Armbar from 50/50 guard

A quick response to all the comments along the "this is not true, applicable BJJ" lines: I completely agree with the sentiment, but would like to point out that this is a direct result, rather than a goal, of competition. Which is to say, either of these guys, were they to get in a hypothetical street fight with someone untrained, would obviously not pull guard this way, and would no doubt have a choke or armbar in a matter of seconds. To have those brown belts, they must have a complete game.

i suppose it's a different avenue for players who don't have as good TDs. when you say TDs were an integral part of the art, i think that's not as much the case these days. most schools don't spend so much time on standup (that's as far as i'm aware of in sydney). the standup aspect of jj is like a whole other art in and of itself.

i don't train for self defense anymore, i train because i enjoy it. i train my standup, wrestling and conditioning only because i you *really* need it to compete.

Furthermore I agree with what your saying about strategy, and, I never mentioned Keenan. So why did you comment that to me?
