Here's a fact that I'm sure YOU didn't know. Kiribati is not pronounced "Kiri-barty", but "Kiri-bass"! (The 'ti' sound in the local Gilbertese language is given the 'ss' sound.) Similarly, the island of Kiritimati is pronounced as Kirissmiss, as it was named Christmas Island by Capt. James Cook, having arrived there on Christmas Eve during his Pacific voyage of 1777/78.
