On this day in history, March 11th, 1958, an American B-47 bomber accidentally dropped a 7000 pound nuclear bomb on a family home in Mars Bluff, South Carolina. The bomb, which was not armed with its nuclear capsule, created a crater 75 feet across and damaged several homes in the area.
The incident occurred during a routine training exercise, when the B-47 experienced mechanical difficulties and the crew decided to jettison the bomb to avoid a more serious accident. Unfortunately, the bomb fell on the home of Walter Gregg, who had served as a paratrooper during World War II, causing extensive damage and injuring several members of the family.
Although the bomb did not detonate and there were no fatalities, the incident underscored the dangers of nuclear weapons and the risks associated with their use. It also highlighted the importance of effective safety protocols and procedures to prevent accidents and protect civilians.
