Vintage Art Supplies Haul! Swatching Old Crayons and Pencils - Are They Still Good?

As you may or may not know, I am quite a collector of old vintage and antique art supplies. Over the past year or so I have managed to collect some more items and I thought it would be fun to share these, and show you a couple of the vintage and antique markets that we visited on our recent trip. I also swatched out some of the crayons and pencils I found, some I am pretty sure are older than I am. Are they any good? Let's find out!

Loved it. Being an old person, I really enjoy seeing younger people who appreciate art supplies that were around when I was a child. You done good! I actually cook with a cast iron skillet my father bought in 1909! Cowboys used sand to clean their pans. You might want to get some fine grain sand from a craft store and use it to remove some of the rust from it. Most people use cooking these days to season their pans. My dad always used the fat back from slabs of bacon. Yup I am that old!

This was so entertaining. I love that you included shop footage at the start and then showed your purchased items in detail. BTW, I always prefer my art supplies to be 'non-injurious'. 😂

Ooh the biscuit tin is so cool and fancy!! I can’t believe how much things have changed. Many products these days aren’t made to last, but those old ones definitely were made to last a lot longer. I’m geeking out over the vintage Staedtler set haha. It’s fun to see the slight differences over time. It does look very 80s. And the vintage derwent ahh! This video is too much fun😂

I have that Rembrandt tin! My mum kept embroidery threads in it, and now I use it to store my pigment liners and brush pens :)

Very interesting market Becky thank you for showing us something interesting from Australia that certainly isn't non-injurious!

The staetler set looks eighties to me. I probably have some similar knocking about! The tiny pot of leads are for a staedtler compass or dividers, I definitely have an eighties version of it, that is plastic so yours are maybe even earlier. The brass brush/pen rest is nice. I would clean it up too. A charcoal art piece would be good.

Wow what a haul, love the ink wells and old Derwents. I can spend hours in those kind of shops, so much fun.

I didn't think some of my supplies were vintage, but I guess they are. My mother, 60 years ago, bought me a set of Venice Paradice pencils. She told me they were expensive and to take good care of them. I did and still have most of them. They still work the same, the colors are the same. I got a good paint brush in 1964 and still have it and still use it. I think those crayons and pencils you got are infinitely older than you think.

I was in Warnambool for the June long weekend. I was hoping to see some nice vintage stores, but I didn't come across any. It was a trip to see relatives, and reminisce about the summers we spent there as kids, and thus I just didn't come across anything like the Fletcher Jones market.

I would love to find some art supplies in these stores too and also cool things to paint. 🙂

Aaaah, I LOVE that cast-iron cauldron! I have one of those cast-iron old-fashioned cooking stoves in miniature. It's my favorite thing ever. I love the box on the Flying Eagle Crayons. Those Derwent pencils were an awesome find (like you said). They also had a great box!

Awesome finds Becky! I love antiques and my art studio is filled with them - but to also find vintage office / art supplies is even better! Love the brass brush / pen rest and those last pencils you got. I also have to mention you inspired me with your restoration of the old metal paint palette; I found a vintage metal Reeves student box and since I already have some Rustoleum black and white paint on hand, so I am looking forward to fixing it up too! Thank you for your videos!

Becky, I hope I'm not too late with this: please don't use Brasso on your pen stand!!! Wash it in warm soapy water to get the gunk off it and leave the patina - that's how old things should look - and I'd love to have it myself! I hate to see old things like this made to shine like new. It takes away all the beautiful patina of years.

I'd put both the Derwent Lakeland pencils and the Flying Eagle as old as the 1950's - when I was a child using these things. The picture on the Flying Eagle makes me think it's even older, as it ties in with picture books I've seen (and inherited) from the 30's and 40's.

Apart from panicking about the brass pen stand, this was a lovely video to watch. I loved browsing around these places back in the UK, and occasionally picking up things to use in my own work and my students' classes. Thank you.

Bingeing on two videos in a row means I'd better go and clean up my kitchen - rather late (it's 10.25 pm here in France!)
