As a Portuguese I feel so ashamed that our government and Madeira's government is not doing more. I am so sorry guys.

This breaks my heart. One thing that no one knows: For some reason, in Portugal fireman gets paid-bonuses per square meter burned! They are volunteers. In order to get paid a proper salary they have to do 12 hour shifts and they get paid extra per m2 burned. The bigger the fire, the more they get paid. I know this sounds crazy and nonsense but this is funded by the wood industry and allowed by the govermnent. Burned wood is sold in auction for 1/10 of the price and is still a useful tool for the industry. When houses are burned, the owners get a compensation equal to 1/4 of the real price of the land and the house. And this is happening now in Spain also.

There is no interest to have as many resources as possible to extinguish the fire because they need the funded money to keep those same resources available and to pay the maintenance. Isnt ironic?

I'm from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. We have a wildfire season every year but these past few years have been the worst on record. I've had the pleasure of visiting Madeira a few years ago and I'm very saddened to hear that these fires are happening there. Madeira is paradise and I hope that this stops soon. More than that, I hope that everyone is safe.

Thank you for the update. I live on the other side of the island. But it breaks my heart that so many trees are being destroyed.

Good news: The Canadair firefighter planes took off in Malaga and are on their way to Madeira

I'm from Coimbra, and just the sight of wildfires scares me, so hot and hard to breathe, the center region is affected by wildfires every year. If the fire reaches Pico do Areeiro, it has a chance to reach Funchal

Miguel Albuquerque, the president of Madeira's regional government should be ashamed.
He is acting like nothing is happening. He is more worried about protecting his image than actually solving the problem.

Plants can grow back, but humans can't, which is why "no one" is taking action, the terrain's so bad you can't even stand properly, let alone get fire trucks in there. Plus, you’ve got to think about the confusing it is to set up, refuel, and do it all again, all while dealing with steep, slippery ground and crazy temperatures. It’s just not doable, to many risks for loss of lives. Helicopters without ground support are also not very useful.

I understand the rage towards the fact that not much is being done to stop the fire, but they will eventually figure it out, Portugal, madeira and açores are very common to wildfires, they know what they are doing. For example, if the fire eats the green and the front of the fire reaches a road for example, all that they have to do is kill the front of the fire with the help of the road, and boom the fire is no more with no risk of losing lives, well unless you count the green, that is sad.

Thank you so much for the updates during scary, awful time. We planned and still plan on traveling to Madeira if it's possible in October. We hope we can get there and help the local economy, even if the trails are closed. We want to help keep the economy going. Fingers crossed they can control the fire soon.

As a Portuguese not only am I saddened but extremely infuriated with how this is being handled. How hard is it to understand that wildfires effects not only air quality, human and environmental health, their consequences extend far beyond the period while the wildfire is actively burning. Wildfires have many long-term effects on human health, wildlife and the
environment . In addition to contaminating the air with toxic pollutants, wildfires also simultaneously impact the climate by releasing large quantities of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. It also impacts the soil such as erosion problems which can affect the land and local water sources. Unstable soil can contribute to mudslides, flooding events, and land degradation. I could go on and on. Portugal we are better than this, something has to change. Thank you Joen and Amelie for bringing us awareness to all of us. ❤ from the US

The idea that everything is ok by the government of the island is because Madeira is a semi dictatorship. in fact journalists are being unwelcomed and their job made dificult for covering the wildfires. It has happened before, the government tries to silence tragedies.., covering up what happens, and the image of the island.

2 water bombers are on it's way to Madeira now. Tomorrow afternoon they will start fire combating.
The helicopter were flying without water because they were transporting the special firefighters to the top of the mountains

Greatly appreciate the coverage as we have friends throughout the island and own a house in Santana and are very concerned

3:25 not all helicopters can carry water as it’s very heavy, and not all pilots are trained to do so. Also you need the water carrying bag with the release mechanism installed.

Finally the planes are coming! Exactly the ones I told you in the last video. We have up to 4 here in our region if needed! 2x CL-415 are better than 20 helicopters.
And the islands government isn't ashamed about there lack of competence and missing actions? I've heard that some of them nevertheless went into there vacation! That's a complete fail and makes me very angry!
