I'm Brazilian and I took a course in food science in uni. In Brazil most milk is sterilized by UHT (ultra high temperature) method, where the milk is exposed to super high temperatures for a few seconds and that kills off any germs. Also the packaging of the boxes is made of several layers of protective materials that keep out contaminants. The sterilization and packaging guarantees that the milk can be safely stored unrefrigerated as long as it's unopened. There is also the option of pasteurized milk, which is typically sold in bags, and those have to be kept in the fridge since pasteurization is a less efficient sterilization method and the bags are more susceptible to microbes.

Hey Steve, Pão de Açúcar is not a good reference for price. This supermarket is more expensive than other as Assai and Atacadão.

Pão de Açúcar is the equivalent to Loblaws in Canada, so it is where you'll find imported goods and among the most expensive prices of retail chains of Brazil

7:20 this is picanha suína (pork) not the beef picanha which is considerably more expensive

Calabresa is a type of LINGUIÇA instead of a SALSICHA.

In Portuguese we make a difference between HOT DOG SAUSAGES/FRANKFURTERS and LINGUIÇAS, which are more akin to Italian Sausages/Chorizos.

Salsicha is a processed, pre-cooked sausage with a smooth, uniform texture, commonly used in hot dogs. It is made from finely ground meat that is emulsified before being encased.

Linguiça, on the other hand, is a coarser, seasoned sausage that is typically raw and must be cooked before eating. It often has more distinct spices and can be smoked or cured, offering a wider variety of flavors."

little tip for buying Calabresa sausage. If in the label/package there is the word "tipo" like this: "Linguiça tipo Calabresa" it means that this sausage is a mixture of chicken and pork meat and it is cheaper generally. If there isn't the "tipo" word: "Linguiça Calabresa", is supposed to be 100% pork meat.

You guys choose one of the most expensive supermarkets in Brazil, other chains are cheaper and have more options,

The milk is not ultra processed. UHT milk is milk that has undergone a process of pasteurization at ultra-high temperatures (UHT), which gives it a shelf life of several months. It's difficult to find fresh milk at supermarkets, it is easier to find at "padarias".

It's prohibited in Brazil to sell crude milk cause it has a high probability of having diseases on it. But the milk that you buy in boxes just go to a process of 180°C for 5 seconds to kill all the bacterias and the boxes are sterilized so the bacteria can not grow inside. There's no chemicals if not the stabilizers so the milk do not burn when heated. 16:02

Yes, Brazil is the biggest coffee producer in the world.

Salsicha = hot dog sausage
Linguiça = any other type of sausage. In Brazil the most common ones are calabresa (made by Italian immigrants from Calabria), toscana (maybe Italian immigrans from Toscana?) and paio (Portuguese sausage).

I appreciate the effort guys, unfortunately Pao de Acucar is the most expensive supermarket chain in Brazil 😅 for example, bananas average price is BRL 3, 00 / kg . Go for the atacadistas (wholesale), where middle class people normally do the groceries 😊

Hey, don’t forget to take a look at fruits and vegetables at a “feira livre”. I’m pretty sure you’ll find better prices and you’ll have a lot of fun talking with the people.

2:14 Happy eggs, is because it comes from "happy chicken". The happy chicken is how we call the chicken that is farm free and not on cages.

Nice video! I’d just like to point out that it would be super nice to support Ivana a little bit more in the store. She mentioned at some point that the basket has been getting heavy yet she still carried it with baby as well. It would have been great to see Steve taking the shopping basket to make it easier for his wife

Hey guys! Don't forget that in Brazil you have the right to use PRIORITY LINES because of the baby, you both! Everywhere! Any kind of line. You don't need to be a citizen, you just need to be a human holding a baby in your arms, look for the priority lines, if there isn't any, just go to the beginning of the line and cut it.
