What is the BEST way to backup your Mac? The best solution for you 5 years ago may not be the best method today! The BEST backup solution must be able to withstand any kind of disaster. Today, David is going to teach you how to use a combination of two methods to make sure all your most important data on your Mac is properly backed up.

This class was taught on a Mac running MacOS Mojave (in case it looks different)

LINKS MENTIONED IN THIS VIDEO

It goes without saying that it is important to back up your data, but with so many methods out there, which is right for you? If EVERY electronic you owned were destroyed... could you still get back your data?

The solution David recommends involves using a combination of iCloud (specifically iCloud Drive and the Photo Library feature) along with a Time Machine backup for safety (just in case anything ever happened to your data on the cloud).

David, you know that good feeling you get when you walk in a apartment store and as soon as you walk in the door, whatever you were going there you find it immediately? Well, this is what this video was like for me. It was "exactly" what I was looking for. I think I will be reaching out to you for a private lesson on some other Thanks, and great videos.

My apologies again considered when you posted this tutorial! As I mentioned previously, I'm desperately trying to retrieve a super important document so I'm just reaching out to everyone and any one who might be able to troubleshoot for this in Time Machine!

Time machine saved my butt when I first got my Mac years ago. I had been fiddling around creating multiple user accounts and forgot the Administrator I.D. I simply went back to before the screw up and was able to log in, and fix it . I use a triple system now...Icloud, time machine and an SSD that I update weekly.

Definitely agree and have used the small thumb drives for backup. I however have had great luck with keychain for years. Works straight out across my devices. And it’s free. The other apps are expensive and mostly subscriptions. Thanks for this important topic and your clear way of explaining it.

Hi David, great video!

Regarding Photos and the part about leaving the computer ON: I find this extremely important subsequent to major updating, i.e. most recently, OS Mojave and iOS. Since Apple doesn’t make it very clear there’s an image update going on in the background, you’ll need to open Photos and scroll way down to the bottom in order to bring up the image counter and view its progress. When the count has completed, compare it across all of your devices AND iCloud.... This used to drive me crazy, as subsequent to a major update, I tend to shoot a few test images to confirmation sync. Most recently, syncing my images between my three devices (iPhone, iPad Pro, and MacBook Pro) seemed impossible. Once I knew of the image count going on in the background, I became more aware of needing to leave the computer ON until the update is complete. However, I wish Apple would move the image counter in Photos so you don’t need to scroll it into view, or at least add a notification that Photos is updating so you know there’s something going on before shutting-down.

For my purposes, the Photos app is useful — consider me an average consumer and not a pro. However, I’ve used the app from early-on, when it was “iPhoto.” With several updates since then, I’ve noticed that Apple will make major revisions to the app without any kind of warning to its end-users, leaving you to figure things out on your own. ... Suddenly, without knowing it, you’ve become an Apple “Beta Tester.” 🍏

6:38 on keychain: I use another password manager for passwords in general. I do sync keychain to iCloud though mainly for one reason: wifi passwords are synced between phone, ipad and laptops... very convenient

Loved this, helps a lot to use iCloud instead of fully relying on the time machine, great idea! Thank you

This was excellent and helped me a lot, so thanks very much. You might think about updating it though to reflect the latest Mac OS as there are now quite a few differences. I am currently running Ventura 13.1. Luckily, I was able to figure everything out because Macs are so wonderfully intuitive to use.

Brilliant. You’re the only person besides me who seems to know about Magic Window. I’ve been using it for years. I even had a stand for my iPhone on my desk so I could watch the changes. Love Magic Window.

Thanks for the vid-very helpful. I have a MacBook & use MS 365 office suit. Is it possible to put this on the icloud or is this pointless? Thanks

Dave, You are the best! I've spent hours with Apple support trying to get migrated from another Mac to a new Mac mini. They could not help me! But YOU did. Using iCloud was the best and by far the simplest way to do this. I'm a huge fan of yours as you've helped me learn bunch of stuff about the Mac. Thank you so much. And BTW, I noticed that it looks like your photos were taken at a Pride event, parade or something.

David, I did not find the "Optimize Mac Storage" checkbox (video time 3:50) although I am running the most updated operating system, which macOS Catalina version 10.15.5.
