Soap isn’t removing seasoning. I sanded my cooking surface down with an orbital sander and reasoned. Plus once the oil polymerizes, it may not even matter.

Brendan you’re usually on point but this take is off.

1) normal dish soap doesn’t contain lye. So you’re not really unseasoning the pan by just using that alone. By viciously scrubbing it though, yes it will.

2) the oils on the pan polymerize. When you’re cooking you’re getting VERY small amounts of the seasoned oil in your food

Pretty much what I’m saying is this is kind of a waste of time

Modern made soaps do not remove seasoning since they don't have as many harsh chemicals. Beef tallow is ok as a seasoning oil but it's smoke point is relatively low and it's flavor isn't very neutral. Best to use a seed oil or avocado oil to season imo

Seasoned cast iron keeping you big as hell

Tip from a person who almost only uses cast iron dont cook tomatoes/any acidic foods untill its very seasoned and season it atleast 3 times i like to do at least 5 times(very important if it has never been seasoned or if you are reseasoning) this will give it that non stick action and makes it crazy easy to clean i perfer to use a course Sponge or a real loofah over the metal scrubber to help protect ur seasoning

Generally the soap and water is fine for cast iron if it's not very hot. I don't think that scrub removed it. Likely you need to use steel wool and to season right you have to do multiple rounds of oil, heat, cool.

We have almost all cast iron here. Ice taken off the seasoning before to have a clean setup and I used steel wool

The keyword he’s forgotten here is “polymerisation”

if you need to reseason you just hear the pan up past the point the oil burns off, he never removed the seasoning on this pan
