Watching this in 2021 and had déjà vu when you talked about preparing for failures lol. I’ve heard you mention it in more recent videos and I think it is important to establish the right or healthy mindset about failing. Many people forget this and I appreciate that you’ve addressed it throughout the years 💚

It's my first try at gardening this year, I begun 2 months ago and it's challenging because I'm growing in pots inside in my bedroom (for seedlings) and on my little balcony (I don't have a garden) but it's lots of fun if I use these tips :)
So far I have eaten salad several times and a handful of strawberries, but I'm expecting bigger veggies for the summer if everything goes right. I have some failures as well but I don't take it bad because I can always replant later.
Plus I do little experiments like planting turnip from the supermarket ;)
So yes, I had some costs for pots, compost, some tools but nothing too expensive, and I think it's gonna be worth it in the end !

Spot on advice Huw! I'm in my second season and made many of the mistakes you mentioned. No regrets of course. I did overspend in the first season. I agree to make the first year your learning year! (Actually the fun part is every year will be a learning year!) ~ Sheryl

HI Huw.  As a beginner who is just coming up to his first anniversary on the plot I would say that spending money is unavoidable at the start but to concentrate on building infrastructure, with things you can buy once and then not have to buy again.  What I mean by that is things like tools, pots seeds etc.  If you do not have compost waiting for you then you are going to have to buy that as well, and that is also unavoidable, but what you should start to do is build up your infrastructure for next year with piles of leaf mould and kitchen waste building up next year's compost.  Mowing the lawn is an excuse to add to your compost.  Raking leaves in autumn is actually building up your leaf mould for next year. Making dinner and peeling your carrots is another opportunity to add to your compost.  You won't be able to use it for a year but at least if you start then you will be able to access it in time, and ultimately avoid buying it.  Look for building sites and ask if they have palettes they don't want or need.  Similarly for scaffolding boards.  These two things can build you a shed and raised beds which can save huge amounts of money.  Look at ways to utilise other people's rubbish in your garden before you consider spending money.  As you carry on you will spend less, oney because you will build up your infrastructure, but don't delude yourself that on day 1 you can do it all right now for nothing.  You can have whatever you want now if you pay for it, or you can wait for it to become available cheaper or wait longer and get it for free, everyone makes their choice what they get, when they get it and how much they pay for it.

These are great tips. Thank you so much. I do pretty well with flowers but last 4 yrs have tried every kind of method to grow veg. So far miserable results. But like you said don't give up! I will keep trying!

Very good video! I especially like the tip about starting with something easy. Back when I started gardening - only flowers back then - I started with some very easy annuals and had great success. I believe that was the main reason why I got so hooked on gardening. You have a great channel and I just subscribed. Keep up the good work! :)
