How To Make An Art Deco Vintage Style Lampshade

This tutorial will show you how to make an authentic looking Art Deco lampshade. The Art Deco period typically covers the 1920's and 1930's - think The Great Gatsby by Scot Fitzgerald, think Downtown Abbey think opulence, think beautiful.
In order to make this elegant lampshade I have used vintage Japanese pure silk teamed with velvet in fabulous colours combined with beautiful fringing.
A big part of the fun is choosing the combination of fabrics and trim.
I have not gone into too many details in this video and refer you to my other videos if you are unsure on any element of the make.

I have been holding on to 4 lampshade frames for about 30 years and never had the courage to start on them. Your instructions are so clear and easy. Now I am going to go for it at last because I like to make everything myself. Thank you so much.

Hello. I too have been making Victorian lampshades for years. However, due to a work injury I became disabled and my hands became swollen and would lock up. Finally after many years my hands are not crippling up and I think after watching your videos I am prepared to attempt making lampshades again. I have several frames that have been untouched for many years. My technique is a little different but I think I will try your method on the next one that I will make. I prefer certain fabrics and have quite good experience with dying fabrics for accent and fringe. I am very excited to have found you and want very much to make some new and lovely lampshades.

Thank you so much for making these videos and sharing your knowledge with us! They're incredibly helpful--right to the point and easy to follow. I have a Victorian house and you can't buy shades like this anywhere. I am a sewer so I'm looking forward to making some once I can get my hands on the frames.

Hi Susan! Amazing tutorial. I’m looking at some beautiful velvets for the outside of my lamp rather than the lining. Could I get away with using a stretch velvet for the outside?

Thank you for wonderful inspiration.
I have a floating hoop lamp shade and I am attempting to cover it. The original paper lining is old and damaged. I am looking at wrapping bias tape around, like you have already shown me, and then using white cotton as lining and floral cotton as a main colour with tassels. Do you have any suggestions I regards to how to manage the floating hoop to get it even. Do I attach the top or the bottom first?
I do hope you can help me.

Hi Susan 😊, thanks so much for your talent and time to share this with us, great tutorial 😀!! I've been buying older lamps for a while and books, but your videos have helped so much. Now I can get to do it!! Do you recommend spraying the flame retardant on the fabric before cutting? Also, is the cotton bias a 1inch, or does it matter? Thank you again for your talent and inspiration and information!!🥰

Do you have any experience with French lamps that have ceramic bottoms, hand painted with roses and gold guiding?
