Can something as simple as a sweet potato really be the start of a sovereign path? You bet it can. This humble, calorie-dense root crop is more than just a side dish—it’s a powerhouse of food security, resilience, and economic potential.

Whether you're looking to cut dependence on grocery stores, feed your livestock, or even turn a profit selling slips and value-added products, sweet potatoes have you covered.

In this episode, I’ll break down why they’re a must-have for any homestead, the best varieties for different climates, and how to store, process, and even brew with them.

From survival food to sovereignty, this is one crop that pulls its weight and then some. If you’re serious about building real food independence, it’s time to give sweet potatoes the respect they deserve.

Fully 40% of my dietary caloroies come from 4 crops:

Sweet Potato
Potato
Corn
Peanut

Hundreds of pounds each.
We aim for 200 pound Sweet Potato, 300-400 pound Potato, 200 pound Corn, 100 pound Peanut ... per person. Most uears we exceed that. Guilty of overproduction ... just ... in .. case.

We settled on these as the Sweet Spot of Calories per hour of labor, Calories per Square Foot of space, ease of maintenance (no trellising, pruning, etc), flexibility in The Kitchen and taste.

You meed all 4 of those, folks.

I tried to sprout a sweet potato last year, an organic one. Couldn’t do it!! I got a slip and green it. Got a nice purple sweet potatoes from the one. I left them in my veggie hammock and I already have one sprouting without even trying!

I READ SOMEWHERE that if you take the tomato directly from the vine and submerge it in white clean wood ash as long as it completely covered will keep for a few months maybe more. some african guy discovered it from using different ways to transport to market without damage
