no one ever mentions carl's cries of distress but it honestly conveys so much. he wanted to act tough and independent prior to this but at the end of the day he was just a kid :( it's no wonder rick wanted the rapist to hurt. he was acting on 100% fatherly instinct. he needed to protect his son!

The governor and the claimers brought out the savageness in Rick. The governor killed Hershel, an important mentor and advisor to him, and destroyed a community he and his group built. The claimers tried to molest his son and friend and we’re gonna make him watch before killing him. Negan was smart saying he wouldn’t want to mess with late season 4 and entirety of season 5 Rick.
