Beg, Borrow and Steal

This applies in many art forms IMO. I used to record a lot back in the day with a 4 track Yamaha Cassette. Had acoustic and electric guitars, bass, keys, and drum machine.
I (sometimes) just took a cool phrase from a song, jammed with it, adding my own style, and played around until it became my own. It can free you from a slump in creativity.
Most of the greats in R&R will admit to stealing half their licks.
I also paint landscapes. I mostly look for and design my own compositions, but sometimes will just start to copy an appealing piece and it also becomes your own, because its almost impossible to copy anothers work perfectly anyway, so all it does is set you on a path.
I watched a vid of some well known reputable painters who were asked to paint some scenes on location of the Hudson River Valley. (Think Hudson River Painters)
7 of them sat in the same location painting the same thing, and youd barely know they were in the same place. People just interpret things so differently.
